So you’ve finally got your hands on a PlayStation 5? Ok, maybe that’s a bit of hyperbole, as the PS5 has been on the market for four whole years, but not everyone was willing to pay secondary market prices.

Plus, Sony recently refreshed the whole lineup, with slimmer PlayStation 5 models with a removable Blu-Ray disc drive.

They still come in Digital Edition and standard versions, but now you can add the drive to the Digital version if you later decide you want the drive.

But even if you just acquired one or its been sitting on your entertainment center shelf for a few years, there are some must-have accessories for the PlayStation 5 that you really shouldn’t go without.

From chargers to controllers, headsets and extra memory, it’s time to upgrade that PS5 from out-of-the-box to awesome box.

This is the top item on many a list for a good reason. You need a controller to play the games, and that controller is the DualSense PS5 Controller.

While the PS5 comes with one of these in the box, that’s only acceptable if you have no friends. We’re not here to judge, but if you have a second pair of hands, you’ll need a second controller.

This controller is next-gen awesome, as the haptics fully engage you in the worlds your characters inhabit.

Toss in some adaptive triggers that provide different levels of resistance based on in-game situations, and a build in secondary speaker, and you’ve got a physical connection to your games.

The Sony DualSense PS5 controller is a must-have for any PlayStation gamer.

Best Charging Station

Playstation DualSense Wireless Charging Station Playstation DualSense Wireless Charging Station
$29.96

The DualSense Wireless Charging Station keeps up to two controllers topped up while you're not gaming, with a design that looks like a mini PS5. It also keeps your PS5's USB ports free for other uses.

What We Like:
  • Charge up to two DualSense controllers without needing to plug them into your console
  • Drop your controller onto the dock to get it charging, lift it up whenever you want to play
  • Also keeps your controllers stored when not in use
01/25/2024 10:00 am GMT

DualSense controllers work better when charged, so the PlayStation DualSense wireless Charging Station is probably the best bet.

With a charging stand, you don’t have to clog your PlayStation’s USB ports. You can just click-in your controllers, and watch them glow yellow until they glow blue. Then they don’t glow. That means they are charged.

It’s recommended that you purchase official Sony chargers for official Sony controllers, but if you have a 3rd party controller, a 3rd party charging station will work just fine.

The end result is your PlayStation DualSense wireless Charging Station will eliminate wasting batteries and time so that you can keep on gaming.

Best Headset

SteelSeries Arctis Nova Pro Wireless Headset SteelSeries Arctis Nova Pro Wireless Headset
$349.99 $296.91

Upgrade your gaming audio with the SteelSeries Arctis Nova Pro, featuring Hi-Fi quality drivers and 360-degree Spatial Audio, which is compatible with Tempest 3D Audio on the PS5 console. You also get active noise cancelation, and hot-swap batteries to get even more gaming time in.

What We Like:
  • Hi-Fi quality drivers for great gaming immersion
  • Dedicated gaming DAC for quality sound
  • Hot-swap batteries so you can extend your gaming sessions
01/26/2024 08:07 am GMT

The Sony Pulse 3D Wireless Headset is fine if you want to stick with Sony stuff, but the SteelSeries Arctis Nova headset is for true gamers.

With Hi-Fi drivers, active noise cancellation, and a ClearCast Gen 2 Mic, this headset is powerful. But really, it’s the 360° spatial audio that really sets this particular headset apart from the rest.

Here’s something you’ll love: you can hot-swap a second battery that’s kept charged in the base unit until needed.

That means you don’t have to stop gaming and risk waking the family when the charge runs out. Just swap the battery, slam the charging cable into the used one and keep going.

Ultimately, the SteelSeries Arctis Nova Pro Wireless Gaming Headset is for that next-level sense immersion.

Best Subscription

PlayStation $30 Plus – Wallet Funds [Digital Code] PlayStation $30 Plus – Wallet Funds [Digital Code]
$30.00

With PlayStation Plus now having three subscription tiers, the best way to gift a PlayStation gamer is with Wallet Funds so they can choose the tier they want. Plus, it can get to them instantly which is always the best way.

What We Like:
  • $30 of instantly redeemable credit for the PlayStation Store to use on games or Plus
01/26/2024 07:50 am GMT

How we access games has changed over the years, and the PlayStation Plus service understands that. It’s a subscription tier that offers different levels of exclusives, new-ish games, classic games, and cloud storage.

It’s a subscription, but a better deal than buying one game at a time. PlayStation Plus is an essential service if you play more games than you want to buy.

The cheapest plan is PlayStation Plus Essential, and it’s the same as the old PS Plus service. It costs $9.99 per month or $79.99 for 12 months.

The Extra tier is the next step, offering up to 400 downloadable PS4 and PS5 games. This is $14.99 per month, or $134.99 per year.

Then there is Premium, offering downloads of nearly the entire PS library or cloud streaming for the rest. This is $17.99 per month, or $159.99 per year.

Best External Drive

Avolusion Pro-5X Series 8TB External Drive for PS5 Avolusion Pro-5X Series 8TB External Drive for PS5
$105.88

With the PlayStation 5's limited internal storage, you might want a place to offload those huge game files while you play something else. So you're not downloading from the internet all the time, put them on this 8TB drive from Avolusion and save your internet for other uses.

What We Like:
  • 8TB of storage for temporarily offloading your PS5 games
  • Designed to compliment the PS5's look
  • USB 3.0 for speedy transfer speeds
01/26/2024 07:12 am GMT

If you give a mouse a cookie… then you’ll need the Avolusion PRO-5X Series 8TB External Gaming Hard Drive. Well, you’ll need it if you subscribe to PlayStation Plus for sure.

Because the PlayStation itself has limited storage, you’ll need extra storage. 8TB should do it, even if youhave to move games back and forth between your PS5 and this hard drive.

Honestly, it’s the closest you’ll get to owning a physical copy of a game, without purchasing a physical copy of a game.

The Avolusion PRO-5X Series 8TB External Gaming Hard Drive uses USB 3.0, so those game transfers will take as long as it takes you to finish that taco. Plus, you can play PS4 games that are installed on it.

Best Virtual Reality

PlayStation VR2 (PSVR2) PlayStation VR2 (PSVR2)
$549.00

PlayStation is the only console maker to embrace VR gaming, and the VR2 headset is ready to transport you into the virtual game worlds PlayStation can think up. Enjoy titles like Horizon Call of the Mountain in eye-popping immersion at up to 120Hz and you'll wonder why other consoles don't get on board.

What We Like:
  • 4K HDR display to show off impressive gaming visuals
  • Eye-tracking and tracking cameras for positional accuracy
  • Haptic feedback on the headset and the two controllers for better immersion
01/26/2024 07:11 am GMT

You can look at the PlayStation VR2 headset either as its own gaming device or as accessory. Since it needs a PS5 to work, it’s probably an accessory. Regardless, it’s a great way to expand your gameplay out of reality and into virtual reality.

With some of the same features as the DualSense controller, such as haptic feedback and adaptive triggers, it also adds finger touch detection and 3D audio to fully immerse your brain.

Virtual worlds can be a bit scary, but from Horizon Call of the Mountain to Iron Man VR to the hundreds of other games available, the PlayStation VR2 headset will certainly expand your gaming universe.

Best Camera

PlayStation HD Camera, Black PlayStation HD Camera, Black
$59.99

Add the official PlayStation HD Camera to your PlayStation 5, and you'll be set to livestreaming your gameplay to any supported streaming site. Plus, it looks like your console and captures a 1080p Full-HD image.

What We Like:
  • 1080p capture with background-removal tools so you get virtual greenscreen on your PS5
  • Looks like your PS5, just smaller
  • Built-in stand for either on top or below your TV
KnowTechie is supported by its audience, so if you buy something through our links, we may get a small share of the sale.
01/26/2024 07:07 am GMT

If you are into streaming, and you have ahem the assets to put yourself on camera with your streams, then you’ll need a PlayStation HD Camera.

It’s a full HD camera with dual wide-angle lenses so you can easily record or stream your twisted face as you deal with angry gods in God of War: Ragnarok or die incessantly in Ghost of Tsushima.

There are plenty of other 3rd party cameras available, but the PlayStation HD Camera takes advantage of built-in PS5 tools like background removal, and that’s worth the price of admission.

Best Mobile Accessory

01/26/2024 07:00 am GMT

The Nintendo Switch is popular because you can take it on the go, which the Backbone One mobile gaming controller offers PS5 gamers.

It’s a portable controller that works with your phone in place of your PS5 and a monitor. It uses the PS Remote Play service, so you can play on the go with your iPhone.

While the controller isn’t a full DualSense replacement in the way of features, it does have responsive analog triggers, tactile buttons, and clickable thumbsticks.

You can also connect a headset through a 3.5mm headphone jack. Backbone One mobile gaming controller is your solution for PS5 gaming on the go.

Best Racing Wheel

With a green backlight and audio jack, the keyboard keeps you chatting and in the game without saying a word. It’s made of silicone, so your thumbs won’t get fatigued over long gaming and smash talk sessions.

The MoKo Keyboard is a great addition if you spend a lot of time online, but don’t want to say much with your mouth.

Best SSD

Western Digital 2TB Officially Licensed SSD for PS5 Consoles Western Digital 2TB Officially Licensed SSD for PS5 Consoles
$229.99 $179.99

The PlayStation 5 comes with about 660 GB of storage once you account for formatting and the operating system, which isn't much when you consider AAA games can take up 120 GB or more. Add another 2TB of storage by slotting this SSD into the expansion port and enjoy having more games installed.

What We Like:
  • 2TB of storage, giving your PS5 three times as much total storage capacity for the latest games
  • Already has a heatsink applied so it stays cool while gaming or transferring game data
  • Up to 7,300MB/s of transfer speed
01/26/2024 05:56 am GMT

Did you know that you can open up your PS5 and install an SSD drive like the Western Digital 2TB NVMe SSD and Sony is totally cool with it?

Unlike Apple, Sony encourages gamers to mod out their PlayStation, which is basically a PC anyway. So while you’re installing a heatsink, you can toss in this internal SSD.

The Western Digital 2TB SSD is one of the best SSDs for the PlayStation 5, and transfers files at speeds up to 7,300MB/s, which is a bit better than any external drive.

Of course, you have to be willing to open up your PS5 if you want to go this route.

Best Heatsink

Archgon PS5 Heatsink for M.2 NVMe SSDs Archgon PS5 Heatsink for M.2 NVMe SSDs
$25.00

If you're worried about temperatures while adding a second storage SSD to your PlayStation 5, this heatsink from Archgon will keep it running at optimal temperatures while providing some physical security.

What We Like:
  • Designed for the PS5 to fit in the secondary SSD slot perfectly
  • Can cool up to 25C to keep the SSD running at optimal temperatures
  • Fits any M.2 SSD that is compatible with the PS5
01/26/2024 05:42 am GMT

While nothing close to a full gaming PC, PS5s can tend to run hot, and the Archgon PS5 Heatsink alleviates that heat.

It’s worth mentioning this is only necessary if you’ve added a second SSD to your PS5. It’s also unnecessary if you bought the Western Digital drive above, as that already has a heatsink.

This heatsink has up to a 77F (25C) cooling effect and is installed inside your PS5 to dissipate hot air. This is not an accessory for everyone, but hardcore, long-hour gamers will appreciate the drop in internal temp.

During heat tests, the Archgon PS5 Heatsink came in most handy when constantly transferring games from an external drive to the internal drive. Stay cool gamers.

Best Capture Card

AverMedia Live Gamer Ultra 2.1 USB Capture Card AverMedia Live Gamer Ultra 2.1 USB Capture Card
$284.99

The AverMedia Live Gamer Ultra 2.1 USB capture card is the best capture card for any aspiring livestreamer. It can capture 4K60 content with 4K144 passthrough thanks to the HDMI 2.1 ports, so you don't have to sacrifice your game's quality to stream.

Quick Verdict:
Pros:
  • First HDMI 2.1 capture card
  • Capture 4K60 content or 4K30 with HDR
  • Use 4K144 pass-through for the latest consoles
KnowTechie is supported by its audience, so if you buy something through our links, we may get a small share of the sale.
01/26/2024 06:16 am GMT

The PlayStation 5 has HDMI 2.1 output to your TV or monitor, so using a capture card that also supports that format makes sense.

That means purchasing an AverMedia device, as they’re the first on the market with an HDMI 2.1-capable capture card.

This USB-C-powered capture card can pass through 4K 144Hz, so it’s perfect for the 4K120 that the PlayStation 5 can output. The 3.5mm jack also means you can easily pipe in your party chat.

That enables capture of 4K at 60FPS (or 30FPS with HDR), making your YouTube videos look crisper than ever. This is the first card with variable refresh rate pass-through support, so your gaming won’t suffer while you record.

Best Grips

KontrolFreek Performance Grips for Playstation 5 KontrolFreek Performance Grips for Playstation 5
$14.99

Keep your DualSense controller in pristine condition while adding a nice cushioned coat of grip with these stick-on performance grips from KontrolFreek. They might not make you into a MLG gamer but you'll feel like one.

What We Like:
  • Adds comfort and protection to your DualSense controller
  • Easy to apply and to take back off again
  • Will last for a long time
01/26/2024 05:46 am GMT

If you are a long-time gamer you know that the physical aspects of your controllers break down over time, which is where KontrolFreek Performance Grips come in.

Your body oils, Cheetos dust, and spittle wear down the shell on your controller, leaving them slippery and smooth.

These are expensive controllers, so keeping them working well as long as possible is essential to saving money and gaming hard.

KontrolFreek Performance Grips protect the body of your controller with anti-slip material, keeping your DualSense controller working just a bit longer.

And you’ll probably want some thumbstick extenders, which make the DualSense sticks easier to use for precision aiming, while protecting the tops.

Things to consider before buying PlayStation 5 accessories

playstation 5 new colors
Image: Sony

There are a lot of accessories available for your PlayStation 5. It’s hard to imagine gaming without some of them, especially controllers and charging stands. Well, headsets and external drives, too.

The point is, you don’t have to get every single accessory. It’s all based on your needs. There are three things you should consider before buying any accessory.

  1. Does this accessory improve my gaming experience?

Between fight sticks and racing setups, there are a few accessories available to enhance your gaming experience. That is, if it needs enhancement.

Casual gamers likely will find a different value in these items than hardcore fight or race fans. So buy what fits your gaming style, not just whatever is available.

  1. Do I want to open my PS5?

Specific accessories, such as heatsinks and internal fans or drives, require you to open your PS5. This alteration is only for some; if you lack the experience or are anxious about opening it up, you probably don’t need it.

  1. Physical or downloaded?

Buying certain accessories depends on whether you prefer physical games or downloaded games. Don’t buy an external hard drive or SSD drive if you only buy physical copies.

Or search for a different cooling stand if you only download games. Remember, just because the accessory exists doesn’t mean you absolutely have to have it, even if you don’t need it.

Final thoughts on the best PlayStation 5 accessories of 2024

There are many levels of gamer, from casual to hardcore and everything in between. Some accessories are better for the hardcore, while the casual gamer might enjoy the less-is-more approach (but still open to some external storage).

When purchasing PS5 accessories, read a few reviews and recommendations because there’s a lot of junk out there. Ultimately, whatever accessory enhances your gaming experience is the accessory you need.

Quick Answer: While there’s no native functionality on the PS4 or the PlayStation Network (PSN) to gift games to others directly, there are some workarounds you can use.

If you’ve just finished playing a great game, it’s only natural to want to tell your friends about it.

If you bought the physical version, sending them their own copy is easy: just give them the disc, right?

But what if you bought the digital version of a game? Sure, you could Game Share, but maybe you’re uneasy about your account being signed in on a console that isn’t yours.

Thankfully, gaming platforms like Xbox and Steam allow you to gift games digitally.

But what if you want to gift someone a PlayStation 4 game? Sending it through the mail is too expensive, so there has to be another option.

So, can you gift games on PS4?

Short answer: No, but there’s a workaround.

In 2019, Sony stopped letting retailers sell digital download codes.

That meant you had to buy digital copies directly from the PlayStation Store, which doesn’t let you buy codes to gift games on the PS4.

Purchases in the PlayStation Store are immediately attached to your account. But you can still buy DLC, virtual currency, add-ons, and season pass’ from retailers in digital form, so gifting those is easy.

How to gift a game on PS4

While it would be ideal to purchase a digital game as a gift and send the game code to a friend, this functionality is currently not available directly through the PlayStation Store.

Alternatively, you can purchase a PlayStation Store gift card from authorized retailers both in-store and online.

Your friend can then redeem this gift card on their own PlayStation account to purchase games, downloadable content (DLC), subscriptions, and more

If you purchase a PlayStation Store or a PSN gift card , your friend will need to redeem the gift card on their own account to use the funds.

Can you gift physical PS4 games?

new update to playstation app

Yes, you can gift physical copies of games, but these would typically be purchased through retail outlets or online stores that sell physical goods, not the PlayStation Store.

Login to your account, search for the game you want to gift, and select it. Then click on the “Buy as gift” option and enter your friend’s email address and any additional information.

Once the purchase is complete, a game code will be sent to your friend’s email address. Your friend can then redeem the code on their PlayStation account and download the game.

Can you gift games on PS4?

Unfortunately, the PlayStation Store does not currently allow users to gift games on PlayStation 4.

However, there are alternative options, such as purchasing digital gift cards that can be used to buy games.

What do you think? Surprised that Sony doesn’t allow you to gift PS4 games? Let us know over on Twitter or Facebook.

It streams games from your home PS5 via Wi-Fi, but don’t expect it to do anything else—no cloud streaming like Nvidia’s Geforce Now or even Sony’s own PlayStation Plus Premium subscription, and it certainly won’t run anything locally (sorry, no YouTube binge-watching or Netflix chill sessions).

The Portal is, in essence, an eight-inch LCD squished between two halves of a DualSense controller. It’s got a 1080p resolution, 60Hz refresh rate, Wi-Fi 5 support, and a 4,370mAh battery that charges via USB-C.

It also boasts top-firing stereo speakers, a headphone jack, and compatibility with Sony’s new PlayStation Link-enabled headphones for that sweet, sweet, lossless audio. But Bluetooth? That’s a no-go.

When it comes to handling, it’s as if you’ve taken a DualSense, snapped it in half, and slapped a screen in the center.

The build quality is solid, though, and it’s not too heavy at around 530 grams—heavier than a Nintendo Switch OLED but lighter than the beefy Steam Deck. Plus, it’s got those large grips for comfort during those marathon gaming sessions.

Now, about the gaming experience—games like “Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2” are teetering on the brink of playability due to the Portal’s latency, but they’re still in the realm of enjoyment.

The built-in haptics and adaptive triggers of the DualSense are present, which is a nice touch. However, keep in mind that even the pricier DualSense Edge is prone to stick drift, and the Portal is no different.

The real kicker? This device seems to be tailored for the PlayStation faithful who want a straightforward, dedicated streaming solution within their homes.

Whether it’s worth the $200 price tag for a single-use accessory to your already pricey console, especially when there are other options out there, is something to ponder.

The image features a PlayStation portal console, its controller, and a handheld device showing a game screen, all against a vivid purple background.
Image: KnowTechie

As for the reception, The Verge’s Antonio G. Di Benedetto has given us a glimpse into the Portal’s capabilities, though it’s clear there’s still some head-scratching over its purpose.

It’s familiar territory for those who’ve played with Remote Play before, but whether the Portal offers enough to justify its existence remains to be seen.

Kotaku has their hands on the device, and they’re giving it a nod for its sleek design and quality display, but they’re quick to point out that you’d better be cozy with your Wi-Fi router if you want a smooth experience.

The closer, the better because any physical distance is like kryptonite to this gadget, introducing a pesky lag that could turn your gaming session into a test of patience.

A gaming console rests on a wooden surface, flanked by its controller halves. Wireless earbuds lay nearby, creating a modern gaming setup vibe.
Image: Sony

On the flip side, Polygon isn’t mincing words. They’ve labeled the Portal as a peculiar piece of kit for an exceedingly specific audience. Sure, it’s got comfort and performance under the right conditions, but that $200 price tag?

Polygon questions the added value when you can just pair a DualSense with a less expensive device and achieve similar results. Their verdict: unless you’re a die-hard Remote Play enthusiast, the Portal might just be a fancy paperweight.

And then there’s Reddit. Redditors are poking fun at the Portal’s subtle marketing, suggesting that Sony could do a better job at highlighting the need for a PS5 and a solid Wi-Fi connection right on the box.

It seems that some users might be in for a surprise if they’re not fully clued into the Portal’s requirements.

So, what’s the consensus?

If you’ve got a PS5 glued to your hip and your home is blanketed in top-tier Wi-Fi, the PlayStation Portal could be your new best friend.

But for the average Joe who’s already got a bunch of Remote Play options, this might not be the golden ticket Sony is hoping for. Whether it’s a stroke of genius or a swing and a miss, the Portal is stirring up plenty of conversation in the gaming world.

And there you have it, folks—the PlayStation Portal in all its glory. Is it the streamlined gaming solution for your home, or just another piece of tech to pile onto the ‘why did I buy this?’ pile?

Sony has been working on new PlayStation-branded headphones and earbuds under the Pulse monicker. While the company had given a sneak peek into its upcoming gaming-oriented audio products before, we finally have a release date for them.

Sony has now officially announced a release date for the Pulse Elite headset and Pulse Explore earbuds. While the wireless earbuds are coming in a month on December 6th, 2023, the wireless headset is coming a bit later on February 21st, 2024.

Sony is offering lossless low-latency audio using a dongle

We already have multiple headsets from Sony’s gaming gear brand, INZONE, and the company even launched new INZONE earbuds just a month ago priced at $200

With this new gaming audio gear, it offers lossless and low-latency audio with the help of the PlayStation Link USB adapter that plugs into your PS5, PC, or Mac.

However, we don’t know for sure if you will need the dongle with the slimmer disc-less PlayStation 5 Slim coming this fall or if it will come with built-in technology like the PlayStation Portal

Although, Sony plans to sell the PlayStation Link USB adapter as a standalone device, priced at $24.99.

According to Sony, in addition to the 3D audio, the Pulse Explore earbuds and Pulse Elite headset will enable “seamless switching” between compatible devices, enabling users to take calls and enjoy music while gaming.

Overall, it looks like the Japanese company is ready to enhance its already excellent gaming audio portfolio with the new Pulse Explore and Pulse Elite.

And in addition to the new PlayStation 5 Slim launch, the company will be pretty busy for the next couple of months.

Pulse Explore and Pulse Elite pricing and availability

In terms of pricing and availability, both Pulse Explore and Pulse Elite will be available for pre-orders starting November 9 in the United States, UK, France, Germany, and other European countries.

You can only pre-order the audio gear through the PlayStation Direct site and select retailers.

The post Gifting a console? What you should know before wrapping it up appeared first on KnowTechie.

]]>
This year, as with most years, gaming consoles are the year’s hottest gaming gifts. To make the experience extra special, some prep work is involved before gifting a console, games, or peripherals.

Whether that’s the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, or the Switch OLED – any gamer on your list will be thrilled to receive one of these game consoles this year.

Remember that server issues or slow internet could take the holiday cheer out of your gift. Setting up the console beforehand will reduce the time getting that new console up and running.

We’ll show you what you need to know and what preparation you can take before gifting a console to ensure the gamer on your list is ready to play on unwrapping day.

Do these things before gifting a console

Modern consoles are closer to PCs than ever before. You can’t just take them out of the box and start playing immediately.

First, you’ll need to update them to the latest operating system. But it doesn’t stop there.

There are system and controller firmware updates. And if any games come with the console – install and update those too.

It’s important to start this process early, especially if you only have time to work on it during the hours when your children (or adults) are sleeping.

Console updates can take a while and might even take overnight to complete, depending on your internet speed. And that’s without factoring in the time to download and patch any games.

If you plan on doing this right, you have your work cut out for you. The person you’re gifting a console to knows how much time this takes, and will appreciate you all the more.

Pick the right console for the right person

Image: KnowTechie

One thing you need to do before you even purchase a console is to make sure you’re getting the right one. The last thing you want is to give them the wrong console.

A few factors make picking the right console important. Most gamers have a preferred console of choice, and you should find this out before gifting a console.

Additionally, you want to make sure you get the right generation. The latest consoles available from the three major manufacturers are the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and the Nintendo Switch.

If you’re looking to gift a PlayStation 5, there are two options. The standard PlayStation 5 lets you play both physical and digital games. But there’s also a PlayStation 5 Digital Edition with no disc drive that costs a little less.

This year, Sony is refreshing the PlayStation 5 with slimmer versions, upgraded storage to 1TB, and a Blu-ray drive accessory for the new Digital Edition. So, you might want to wait, either to get a good deal or to grab the new version.

The Xbox Series X|S are essentially the same console. An Xbox Series X has a disc drive, and an Xbox Series S does not.

The Series X also has slightly improved specs but costs more than the Series S. There is also a new Series S with 1TB of internal storage, so the only fundamental differences are the size, disc drive, and a more powerful GPU on the Series X.

The Nintendo Switch has three options to choose from. The middle-of-the-road Nintendo Switch is the classic, handheld plus docked Nintendo experience.

If you only want the handheld version, you can save some money and get the cheaper Nintendo Switch Lite.

Finally, there’s the Nintendo Switch OLED Model. This version offers an improved screen, more storage, and various other improvements over the original model. But, of course, it’ll cost you a little extra.

Update the console

updating software before gifting a console
Image: Kevin Raposo / KnowTechie

Nobody wants to spend Christmas Day staring at a console’s update screen. That’s why it’s important to update the software before gifting a console.

To prepare for this, you’ll need to plan. This is especially important if your internet is frequently congested with streaming video and other tasks.

How to set up a new console

xbox series x and playstation 5 on purple background
Image: KnowTechie

Like any other electronics, you want to be careful when you set up a new console for the first time. The process is relatively easy if you follow the steps below.

Step 1: Open the console box carefully. Ensure not to rip anything, and carefully cut the security sticker with a sharp knife.

Leave the two halves on. The last thing you want to do is accidentally tear part of the box when peeling the sticker. You can even replace it with a new security sticker when you’re done.

Step 2: Plug in the console and follow all instructions to update the latest operating system. We recommend using an Ethernet cable for this step, as it enables the fastest download speeds.

You can also use this time to enter any Wi-Fi details if you know them. That’ll save time when your recipient unwraps their console.

Once you’re finished updating the console and installing any games, you can repackage the console.

If you want to go further, get a replacement security seal sticker from Amazon. That way, you can replace the sticker you cut earlier and give your loved one the whole unboxing experience.

How to update a new console

Xbox series s and controller

You might already own the console you’re gifting, so you know how to update them. For everyone else, here are instructions from all three major manufacturers on how to update before gifting a console:

Creating a temporary login is best, and you can delete it afterward. It takes an hour or more to update a console.

You’ll also feel pretty good that you did it early before the millions of other people updating their consoles for the first time, as that can sometimes cause issues.

You don’t need to create a temporary log-in if you’re gifting a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S.

Instead, the console will ask you to update the firmware before it asks you to sign in. But you will need one to update a Nintendo Switch.

Also, make sure to charge the controllers.? The PlayStation’s DualShock 4 uses a micro-USB to charge. The DualSense controllers for PlayStation 5 use USB-C.

Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S controllers need AA batteries unless you buy the Charge n Play accessory, and Switch controllers charge wirelessly when attached to the main console.

Wrapping up a new console

If you want to know how to wrap an Xbox (or any other console for gifting), the best way to do this is in the box. Otherwise, the wrapping job is probably going to look awkward.

You can use traditional methods when wrapping a console or any physical game. If you need a refresher, the video above offers a great explanation of how to wrap a box.

What to do with games for a new console

five games to check out in july 2020
Image: KnowTechie

If you’re gifting a console that came with digital downloads, you’ll need the recipient’s account details to download them. You would want to avoid attaching the games to another account.

You might feel uncomfortable asking, or if this is their first console from that manufacturer, it’s better to leave this unclaimed so they can install the games once they decide on a username.

We recommend you buy any games as physical versions (disc, cartridge, etc) so they can return them if it’s not a game they’ll play. Read the vendor’s return policy fully. Here are the policies for Amazon, Best Buy, and Target.

We like giving gift cards for the console instead of digital download keys. That way, they can pick the titles they want to play.

Make sure you give more than the cost of one game for the latest consoles. That’s $70, to be on the safe side.

If you bought a bundle with Blu-ray-based games, you could install those ahead of time so they can play something while the digital ones download.

Stick them in the drive, let it transfer data onto the hard drive, and start any updates for the game over the internet. That could take hours, so leave the console plugged in and connected to the internet.

How to install physical games on a console

ps5 game install

Now, you can think about installing any physical games that you got to join the console gift. Depending on which console you’re gifting, that process might differ slightly.

Nintendo Switch

Image: KnowTechie

Physical games for the Nintendo Switch come as small cartridges. They should work right out of the box. You can even play many of them while any updates are downloaded.

You can safely leave them in the shrink-wrapped box so your recipient gets all the joy of tearing them open. It won’t take long for them to get into the game once they pop the cartridge in the console.

Remove that shrink wrap carefully if you want to go the extra mile. Lift the two tabs on one short side and slide the shrink wrap off.

Then do the same on the other side once you’re done. You can even reseal it with a dab of glue.

Connect the Switch to the internet, then place the cartridge into the console. Follow the instructions that will pop up for updating and installing.

Then pop the cartridge out and back into the box once it updates.

PlayStation

Image: Unsplash

Many games for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 can be played without an update. But some will require an update first.

As a responsible person gifting a console, it’s worth preinstalling and checking for updates. Important bug fixes or added content could be part of those updates.

You can update games without having to sign into a PSN account. Please carefully remove the shrink wrap to make sure it is usedto seal the box when you’re done. Insert the disc into the drive and follow the prompts.

Once the installation is done, run the game once. That lets it connect to the internet to download any updates. Eject the disc, put it carefully back in the box, and put the shrink wrap around it.

Xbox

xbox series s and series s on white background
Image: Microsoft

Unlike PS games, most Xbox One and Xbox Series X games must be installed on the internal hard drive. Most of the time, they also need an update before they load.

First, you need to sign in with an Xbox account. Create one just for this process, then sign in. Open the shrink wrap carefully, and slide the disc into the slot. Install it as prompted, then get ready to update everything.

Press the Xbox Guide button on the controller, then select My Games and Apps > See all. On the next screen, scroll down to Manage > Updates and update every game you see in the list.

Wait for them to finish updating, then you can remove the temporary account you created earlier.

That will load all the games and content onto the Xbox, but make it so your recipient can sign into their own Xbox account when they unwrap their present.

Throw in an extra controller (or two)

xbox nintendo and playstation controllers
Image: KnowTechie

Another good idea to consider when gifting a console is throwing in an extra controller. That way, the person you’re gifting doesn’t have to play alone.

Of course, if you’re gifting this console to someone who only plays alone or online, they might not need an extra controller.

But it’s nice to have more than one when there will be more than one person gaming on the console.

The Nintendo Switch comes with detachable controllers that can be split up and used by two people. However, you can snag an extra pair of JoyCons for party gaming with up to four people on one console.

How To Wrap A Switch Game

To wrap a Nintendo Switch game, start by placing the game case on a flat surface. Lay the wrapping paper flat with the design facing down and position the game case on top. Fold the sides of the paper over the case and secure with tape. Fold the top and bottom flaps, taping them down for a neat finish.

PlayStation and Xbox consoles typically come with one controller unless you get a special bundle that states otherwise. That makes them a great candidate for snagging an extra controller to add to the gift.

For the PlayStation 5, the latest controller available is the DualSense Wireless controller starting at $69. Microsoft also improved its controller for the Xbox Series X|S, available starting at $49.

That’s a wrap on gifting a console

So, there you have it. That’s all you should do if you plan on gifting a console or game this holiday season.

It’s important to remember today’s consoles are closer to PCs than ever. You can’t just take them out of the box and immediately start playing.

Doing all this legwork will ensure whoever you’re gifting a console lets them play right on day one.

The first real-world image of the upcoming PlayStation 5 Slim has been leaked. It happened a few hours ago on X/Twitter, but the leaker, user @phantompainss, removed it from the feed as fast as possible, likely due to intervention from Sony.

Thankfully, the folks at The Verge were quick on their feet and were able to capture a screenshot of the first real image of the new PS5 Slim. We’ve previously seen the PS5 Slim in a leaked video.

The image shows the PlayStation 5 Slim console up close, standing next to its chunkier and older counterpart, the original PlayStation 5.

The new slimmer PS5, is expected to go on sale later this month, is priced at $499.99, and $449.99 for the digital version. It looks slightly slimmer and smaller in direct comparison to the original PS5.

The folks at The Verge noted the PlayStation 5 Slim has the same posts as its bulkier counterpart. So, you are getting the same single HDMI port, two USB ports, and an ethernet port, and expect nothing else.

You likely won’t be able to use the PS5 Slim disc drive without internet

While the leaked image shows the detachable disc drive of the PlayStation 5 Slim in full view, the image also showcased the setup screen, which confirms the widely speculated rumor about the disc drive needing an internet connection to function.

The setup screen prompt says the following.

Can’t use your disc drive. You need to connect your PS5 to the network to register your disc drive to your PS5.

Now, it may just be that you may only need the internet connection initially just to pair the detachable disc drive to the PS5 Slim, and previous rumors have stated the same.

However, there are concerns about what will happen if Sony ever closes down the authentication serves for the PS5 and the drive in the future.

Hold onto your controllers, folks, because Spider-Man is swinging into record books faster than you can say ‘web-slinger’!

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, the latest gaming sensation to hit the PlayStation universe, has sold over 2.5 million copies in its first 24 hours after release.

Yup, 24 hours. 2.5 million copies. Makes you wonder how many Spidey fans pulled an all-nighter, doesn’t it?

This feat has catapulted our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man to the top of the charts, making it the fastest-selling game ever released by PlayStation Studios.

Now, if you remember, God of War Ragnarok held the previous record with over 5.1 million copies flying off the shelves in its first week. But with Spidey’s current pace, Kratos might need to pass on his crown sooner than he thought.

Sure, selling a lot of copies is one thing, but how’s the actual game?

Well, Reddit gamers are going bonkers over it, saying it’s smoother than a freshly ironed Spidey suit. How smooth? Well, imagine your favorite action flick, but you’re the one doing the stunts – that’s how smooth it is.

They’re even suggesting we dust off the old Spider-Man Remastered just to see how far we’ve come.

Metacritic is also singing Spidey’s praises, saying the game has improved so much it’s like Peter Parker’s gone from high school nerd to full-blown Avenger.

The story? More exciting than a comic book. The action? More thrilling than a roller coaster ride.

But hold up, not everyone’s completely starry-eyed. Forbes hinted there might be a hiccup in our web-slinging paradise. They didn’t spill the beans on what it is, but hey, nobody’s perfect, right?

It was only last week Sony announced they were replacing the PlayStation 5 and PS5 Digital Edition models with slimmer versions, i.e., the PlayStation 5 Slim.

While the Japanese tech company is not officially calling them PlayStation Slim, the new refreshed models are slightly smaller and thinner than the original. Hence, the unofficial moniker, which comes after some PS5 Slim leaks.

And now, a new leak has revealed when you can expect the new PlayStation 5 refresh to arrive – November 10, 2023, at least in the United States.

When will PlayStation 5 launch?

In its earlier blog post, Sony revealed that they are planning to roll out the new PlayStation 5 refresh or PlayStation 5 Slim, in November and only after the current model’s inventory runs out.

According to data miner billbil-kun, both variants (Disc and Digital) of the PS5 refresh, or PS5 Slim, will be released in the US on November 10, 2023.

However, the most anticipated PS5 Slim with Spider-Man 2 bundle will land on November 8 – two days early.

Is the current PlayStation 5 and the upcoming PlayStation 5 Slim any different?

Sony says the upcoming PlayStation 5 Slim uses the same technology as the current PS5. The only difference is the refreshed models come in a slightly smaller package.

There are also minor modifications, like the addition of a 1TB SSD and an attachable Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive specific to the digital version.

Sony has also stated they were able to reduce the volume by 30% and weight by 18% and 24% compared to the current models.

PlayStation 5 Slim Disc Drive will be sold separately

In terms of the prices, PlayStation 5 Slim will have the same $500 price tag as the original. However, the digital version’s price will be slightly higher at $450, and you can get a disc drive separately for $80.

Unfortunately, the global release date of the PlayStation 5 Slim is still unknown. Sony said it will happen in the months to follow.

The post PAC-MAN 99 shuts down, new PAC-MAN battle royale announced appeared first on KnowTechie.

Back in September, Nintendo announced that the digital-only PAC-MAN 99 game would join its mustachioed sibling, Super Mario Bros. 35, in the great big pile of lost media in the sky. Today, that officially happened.

Officially, support ended on Sunday, October 8th. But, seeing as that was a Sunday with a federal holiday the next day, the game has been officially delisted as of today.

The game pitted 99 players against each other in classic PAC-MAN gameplay, with the ability to mess with your opponents in various ways. As with all battle royale games, only one can make it to the end.

The good news is that those who bought the DLC prior to it being delisted will still be able to play PAC-MAN 99 offline. People looking to get the game or DLC at this point are entirely out of luck, though.

Nintendo announced last week that they were killing the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U servers. So, we can just add it all onto the burn pile.

Nintendo recently announced and released F-ZERO 99, a chaotic F-ZERO game that has 99 players all racing on the same track. But they also still have the long-running Tetris 99 going full steam.

Back in 2021, they removed Super Mario Bros. 35, a fan-favorite battle royale game that had players compete while playing the NES classic. It was a special edition for the 35th anniversary of Mario, but it was gone much too soon.

PAC-MAN 99 isn’t the only pellet-eating battle royale in town.

Even though Pac-Man 99 is officially now lost media, Bandai Namco came in with the clutch today by announcing the mouthful of a title, PAC-MAN Mega Tunnel Battle: Chomp Champs. Chomp Champs will be on all consoles when it comes out in early 2024, which will likely also be compatible with whatever Nintendo has planned for a Switch 2.

PAC-MAN Mega Tunnel Battle was a digital-only Google Stadia exclusive. With the end of all Stadia support, this enhanced version will satisfy those looking for a new Pac-Man-based battle royale.

RIP, PAC-MAN 99. May you wakka-wakka your way to the big pellet in the sky.

Today, Sony announced that they’re replacing their current PlayStation 5 and PS5 Digital Edition models with slimmer versions this November. Not only that but they’re getting updated in terms of ports and all-around structure.

There will be two models: PS5 and PS5 Digital Edition.

As the names suggest, one comes with a physical Blu-Ray disc drive, and one doesn’t. But you’ll be able to buy an additional Blu-Ray drive for $79.99, which attaches to the side of the system as if it were the normal PS5.

According to their blog post detailing the changeup, the new systems will be lighter and less bulky than what’s currently available, thus making them the PS5 Slim consoles that Sony eventually offers for each generation.

The volume will be reduced by a whopping 30%, and it’ll be lighter by between 18% and 24%, depending on your console choice.

This news comes as no shock to those who have been paying attention to video games and hardware for the past ten months. This has been an ongoing story since December 2022.

Back in December, we detailed a rumor about a “modular” PlayStation 5, which offered a detachable disc drive accessory. This is clearly the outcome of that rumor.

Since then, additional rumors and video leaks have added fuel to the fire. But, it was the Microsoft court case against the FTC that really blew it all wide open in July.

Their internal documents went into the public record, and they detailed their thoughts about a PlayStation 5 Slim. While they were a tad off about the final pricing, the fact that they talked about it was a big deal at the time.

Once the current lineup of PlayStation 5 is dried up after November, they’ll officially discontinue it in lieu of the new models. But it’ll give people a new option as we head into the holidays.

The new slim PlayStation 5 will retail for $499.99, with the Digital Edition at $449.99. You’ll be able to buy the additional, detachable Blu-Ray drive for $79.99.
