Let’s not beat around the bush: We all love the internet. It’s a treasure trove of information, a place where we meet friends, and it offers us a good laugh at silly memes.

But every now and then, it feels like we’ve opened a can of worms, and what pops out isn’t exactly a laugh riot.

Case in point: a recent report by Arstechnica has revealed a gross misstep by Google and Bing. Turns out, they’ve been putting nonconsensual deepfake porn at the top of their search results. And yes, it’s as bad as it sounds.

A deep dive into the NBC News investigation revealed that out of 36 popular female celebrities’ names coupled with terms like “deep fake,” “deep fake porn,” and “fake nudes,” 34 Google searches and 35 Bing searches led to explicit deep fake content.

And we’re not talking about buried links or images; these were front and center, hogging the limelight of the prime real estate that is the first page of search results.

What is Deepfake porn?

For the uninitiated, deepfake porn involves pasting a person’s face onto the body of another in a pornographic video or image — all without the person’s consent.

The internet, apparently, has a black market for this kind of stuff, with popular deepfake websites and forums acting as the seedy underbelly.

Not to be outdone, Windows Central added more fuel to the fire. Not only were deep fakes of popular celebrities being peddled, but also “fake nude photos of former teen Disney Channel female actors.”

Even Microsoft’s AI assistant Copilot, although refusing to display deepfake porn directly, listed links that could lead users down the rabbit hole.

Now, before you go all ‘Black Mirror’ on us, both Google and Bing do offer victims the option to request the removal of nonconsensual content through online forms. But critics argue this is a mere drop in the ocean.

More needs to be done to combat the prevalence and discoverability of deepfake pornography, as this issue starts to impact not just celebrities but also average Joes and Janes.

Interestingly, when NBC News reached out to Google, the tech giant acknowledged the issue and stated that they are working to strengthen protections on Search.

However, despite these assurances, the fact remains that tech giants have been slow to curb the rise of these deepfakes.

Quick Answer: Deepfake porn involves using AI to superimpose individuals’ faces onto pornographic content without their consent, raising serious ethical concerns.

What does the rise of deepfake pornography say about our society’s relationship with technology and consent?

Deepfake porn relies on advanced deep-learning algorithms that can analyze facial features and expressions in order to produce realistic face swapping in videos and images.

While the technology itself is neutral, its nonconsensual use to create involuntary pornographic deepfakes has become increasingly common.

The term “deepfakes” combines “deep learning” and “fake” to describe this content that depicts people, often celebrity deepfake porn, engaged in sexual acts that they never consented to.

Their faces are mapped onto the bodies of adult performers without permission, in essence creating a digitally falsified reality.

What is a deepfake?

Short Answer: Videos with faces swapped out onto bodies in videos, making it appear as if they’re in a porn video.

Deepfake porn videos are created using AI to swap faces onto bodies in videos, making it look like individuals are in explicit content.

In the world of adult content, it’s a disturbing practice where it looks like certain people are in these videos, even when they’re not.

Why is it an issue?

Critics have raised legal and ethical concerns over the spread of deepfake porn, seeing it as a form of exploitation and digital assault.

The subjects, predominantly women, have no control over these realistic but fabricated videos that appropriate their likeness and identity.

This takes away their ability to consent to the sexual acts seemingly depicted and robs them of autonomy over their own intimacy.

Additionally, deepfakes have been used as tools for harassment, manipulation, and even blackmail.

While deepfake technology itself is neutral, its nonconsensual use for pornography warrants examination. Shouldn’t people have a right to consent regarding their own depiction in sexual media?

Call for accountability

In light of these concerns, lawmakers and advocates have called for accountability around deepfake porn.

From a legal standpoint, questions have emerged around issues like copyright, the right to publicity, and defamation statutes.

Technologists have also highlighted the need for solutions like digital watermarking to authenticate media and detect involuntary deepfakes. Critics have called on companies creating synthetic media tools to consider building ethical safeguards.

There have also been demands for policies that prohibit nonconsensual deepfake porn, enforce takedowns of deepfake pornography, and allow for civil recourse.

This complex issue intersects technological capabilities with ethical norms around consent, calling for nuanced public debates on the way forward.

If you have thoughts on this issue, share them in the comments below. If you prefer, carry he conversation over to our Facebook and Twitter.

The post Google to settle Chrome Incognito Mode lawsuit — will you get paid? appeared first on KnowTechie.

]]>
Google has agreed to settle a class action lawsuit that alleged the company impermissibly collected Internet activity data from users of its Google Chrome browser, while in Incognito Mode.

The lawsuit was filed back in 2020 by three Internet users — a resident of Florida and two residents of California — who argued that Google continues to collect information from users when they switch into Chrome’s Incognito mode.

In support-related materials published by Google, the tech giant claims that Incognito mode allows users to “browse the web privately” in a way that doesn’t allow Chrome to retain certain information, like browsing history and cookies.

But the three plaintiffs in the case said certain Google services, like Google Analytics and Google Ad Manager, still transmitted some data directly to Google about the types of websites Chrome users visited and how they interacted with them.

This led to the massive lawsuit against Google, which has now been settled outside court. For now, we don’t know all the implications and the possible payout, but that will likely become public come January 2024.

$5 billion lawsuit against Google settled outside court

The plaintiffs alleged Google violated various federal wiretapping laws by collecting data from users who opted for Incognito mode. They sought at least $5 billion in restitution from Google on behalf of Chrome users.

Google tried to have the lawsuit thrown out of court in 2021, but a judge ruled against them after determining the company “did not notify users that Google engages in the alleged data collection while the user is in a private browsing mode.”

Still, Google held firm. A spokesperson told financial news outlet Bloomberg that the company “strongly dispute these claims, and we will defend ourselves vigorously against them.” The spokesperson said,

“Incognito mode in Chrome gives you the choice to browse the Internet without your activity being saved to your browser or device. As we clearly state each time you open a new Incognito tab, websites might be able to collect information about your browsing activity during your session.”

Now, nearly three years later, Google has decided to settle the case. In a court filing published this week, Google said it reached a “binding term sheet,” or firm commitment, that resolves the issues at the center of the lawsuit.

The agreement still requires the approval of a federal court judge that is overseeing the case, but courts typically green-light settlements like this, particularly where there are no objections from either side.

Google Chrome is the most-widely used web browser in the United States, with six out of 10 devices running some version of the software.

In addition to being the default web browser on most phones and tablets running Android, Google Chrome is extremely popular on desktops and laptops with Windows and MacOS, and a version of Google Chrome is also available for those who prefer Linux.

Being one of the most-popular browsers comes with several advantages: The company behind the number one web browser essentially gets to dictate how certain levers of the Internet are pulled.

Chances are, you’ve encountered a website that incorporates a mixture of Google Analytics, Google Ad Manager, Google Fonts, Google Amp or some combination of the four — or maybe all four.

When you want your website to work for the most people, you build around the browser people tend to use the most — and Google Chrome is it.

Google Chrome also helps set industry trends and standards. It may not have been the first browser to offer extensions (Internet Explorer did it in 1999) or private browsing (Safari did it in 2005) or any of the other features we take for granted (like autofilled password fields).

Image: KnowTechie

However, it arguably improves upon those features, and other browsers tend to franchise those improvements.

But no one wants to own the most-popular anything when it comes to litigation. In this instance, a class action lawsuit would have counted anyone and everyone who ever used Google Chrome’s Incognito feature to browse the web between mid-2016 and early 2020.

The plaintiffs sought $5,000 from Google for every user who was allegedly duped into thinking that Incognito mode didn’t collect or transmit any web-related data to Google.

That number quickly adds up when counting the tens of millions of Google Chrome users in the United States — and that is how the plaintiffs came up with their $5 billion demand that was presented to the court.

Beyond requiring Google to open up its checkbook, the lawsuit could have been devastating to other tech companies that offer up similar features to Chrome’s Incognito browser.

Chrome aside, the next four most-popular web browsers in the United States are Safari, Microsoft Edge (a fork of the Chromium browser, which powers Google Chrome), Mozilla’s Firefox and Opera, each of which has its own private browsing mode that functions similar to Incognito.

An unfavorable outcome for Google in its class action lawsuit could have invited similar lawsuits against those and other developers that offer web browsers with private modes.

Technically, the outcome of this lawsuit doesn’t legally prevent similar class action cases from being launched. But, it seems highly unlikely that any plaintiff or law firm will rush to the courthouse to file one, since the lawsuit against Google was ultimately settled.

What does the settlement mean for Google and Chrome users?

google incognito screen
Image: KnowTechie

The outcome of this particular class action lawsuit is something of a mystery: The case was settled behind closed doors and through a mediator, which means a lot of what was discussed between the two sides will remain private.

Had the case proceeded to trial, the plaintiffs would have been entitled to certain records related to the development and marketing of Google Chrome and its Incognito feature.

Those records could have included internal developer notes, logs of various bugs, e-mails between Google employees and marketing materials related to Chrome and Incognito mode.

They could also include the precise number of people who installed Chrome and turned on that feature — if any of that materials was actually available. At least, in this case, the public will not know, because the case was settled.

The terms of the settlement are also unknown at this time. Neither Google nor the plaintiffs in the case offered details of the settlement, including whether Google will agree to pay out anything or change how it promotes Chrome’s Incognito feature to users.

The last time Google agreed to settle a consumer-driven class action lawsuit (it happened just a few weeks ago), the outcome was a $2 credit for Play Store purchases.

The plaintiffs in the case and Google are expected to notify the court about the terms of the settlement by late January 2024, at which point it will become a matter of public record.

That is, unless both sides agree to keep the settlement confidential (which seems unlikely to happen). The judge overseeing the case is expected to approve the settlement in February.

The post What do Wi-Fi numbers actually mean? appeared first on KnowTechie.

]]>
Wi-Fi is ubiquitous in modern life, with the average American household having 22 connected devices. You might have noticed the naming scheme changed, with Wi-Fi numbers instead of letters after the name.

But what does that mean, exactly?

Well, in the proud tradition of bigger numbers = better, Wi-Fi has improved with every new standard. These improvements brought more bandwidth, better range, and the ability for more connected devices.

What they also brought was a headache, as the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers’ (IEEE) 802.11 naming scheme was confusing.

Seriously, why was 802.11b the first version of Wi-Fi, with 802.11a coming afterward? It took until the fourth iteration of Wi-Fi that the Wi-Fi Alliance decided it needed a simpler name.

Enter Wi-Fi 4 or 802.11n if you’re still part of the IEEE. Now we’re almost on Wi-Fi 7, with devices coming out before the standard is made official.

So what does that Wi-Fi number mean? We’ll explain the different Wi-Fi versions and why you want a particular generation.

What does Wi-Fi actually stand for?

wi-fi numbers are decided by the wi-fi alliance
Source: Wi-Fi Alliance

Wi-Fi is such a recognizable name that you probably already know what it stands for, right? After all, if Hi-Fi is “high fidelity, ” Wi-Fi is “wireless fidelity,” right?

Well, not really. As Cory Doctorow writes, a founding member of the Wi-Fi Alliance said, “Wi-Fi doesn’t stand for anything.”

Wi-Fi doesn’t stand for anything. It is not an acronym. There is no [deeper] meaning.

The name is pure branding, dreamt up by the same brand consultancy, Interbrand, that coined other household names like Prozac, and Compaq.

Now that you know that, would you still like to know what the Wi-Fi number stands for? If the name doesn’t mean anything, does the generation matter?

Well, if you want the best speeds for your home network and the devices on it, yes, it matters. Read on to find out why.

Which Wi-Fi number are we currently on?

meshforce mesh wireless wifi router
Image: Kevin Raposo / KnowTechie

Currently, the Wi-Fi number that most new devices come with is Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax). Some devices use Wi-Fi 6E, which adds another band to the Wi-Fi 6 specification without changing existing details.

This wireless protocol is faster, can handle more devices, and is built to handle the quicker fiber-to-the-home internet services available to consumers. It also comes with 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands for either distance or throughput.

Wi-Fi 6 can transfer data at up to 10Gbps, theoretically, but in real terms you’re unlikely to see that speed. What you will see is more responsivity when multiple devices are connected to the network, keeping everyone happier.

Other improvements include scheduling based on device needs, so someone on your network streaming 4K video will get more bandwidth than someone scrolling social media or checking emails.

You will also see less interference in urban areas and anywhere else that multiple networks are in close proximity. And the other big benefit is enhanced battery life on mobile devices, as the wireless connection is open for less time.

Wi-Fi 6E brings a new band, 6GHz, which enables faster speeds and lower latencies–if your devices support it. It’s not widely supported outside of brand-new phones or laptops.

Should you upgrade to Wi-Fi 6 now?

vilo mesh wifi router on entertainment center next echo dot
Image: Kevin Raposo / KnowTechie

While devices are now starting to come with Wi-Fi 7, only a few routers are on the market using the upcoming standard, and all are expensive.

Yes, a bigger Wi-Fi number does mean better Wi-Fi (mostly), but you don’t need to spend on the newest standard.

If you’re in the market for a new router now, you can safely upgrade to a Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E router and have years of quality, solid connectivity at home.

As to how to know if you should upgrade, if your router is over three years old, or if you get connectivity issues in corners of your home, it’s probably time.

A mesh network with multiple node routers will clear up any dead zones of wireless connectivity in your home, and Wi-Fi 6 or 6E will perform well whether it has a few or a few dozen devices attached.

We like Eero’s range of affordable, easy-to-use mesh routers, which has several models with Wi-Fi 6 or 6E connectivity. Or, if you already have a Wi-Fi 6 router, you can add an extender to gain some range.

It’s also worth mentioning that any Wi-Fi 6 router will be backward compatible with earlier Wi-Fi numbers, so you can rest assured it will work with your existing wireless devices.

Where Wi-Fi is going

Wi-Fi numbers will keep going up, starting with Wi-Fi 7 which is expected to be finalized in 2024. That said, you don’t have to pick up a compatible router just yet.

The Wi-Fi Alliance started certifying Wi-Fi 6 devices in 2019, and devices are still being released today with earlier versions of Wi-Fi onboard. The switch to Wi-Fi 7 could take a while, as the switch to Wi-Fi 6 did.

Add the low number of Wi-Fi 7 routers, and their incredibly high price, and you’re perfectly fine waiting. Whereas, Wi-Fi 6 routers can be picked up for under $100, which is a perfectly affordable price for an instant upgrade.

Even the proponents of Wi-Fi 7, like chipmaker giant Intel, use 2030 in its marketing as the date to show where wireless connectivity is going. Most users can wait unless, of course, you’re an early adopter.

When you close a PayPal account, it’s gone forever. To some, the thought is liberating. To others, it’s distressing—so make sure you’re sure before you delete your PayPal account permanently.

Also, be sure to download your transaction history for your records before closing your account. This way, you’ll have a log of your financial activity if you need it after your Paypal account is closed.

  1. Tap Close Account on the next prompt to confirm and permanently delete your account

That’s it. Once you complete the final confirmation, you can consider your PayPal account taken care of. It won’t be around to bother you anymore.

Can you reopen a closed PayPal account?

As mentioned, closing a PayPal account is a permanent action, and there’s no way to resurrect a nuked account.

However, if you change your mind and decide you do want PayPal in your life, you can always create a new account and start fresh. You can even use the same email address as before.

Basically, if you’ve had a change of heart, you can recreate your old account and act as if nothing ever happened.

How can I transfer my PayPal balance before deleting my account?

  • Log into PayPal
  • Click “Wallet”
  • Under “PayPal balance”, click “Transfer Money”
  • Click “Transfer to your bank”
  • Select your bank account
  • Enter the amount and click “Next”
  • Review and click “Transfer Now”

Can I create a new PayPal account with the same email after deletion?

Absolutely! Once you’ve said goodbye to your old PayPal account, you can use the same email to start fresh with a new one. Just make sure you’ve given the deletion process some time to fully wrap up before you dive back in.

Will deleting my PayPal account affect my credit score?

Closing your PayPal account isn’t like closing a credit card – it won’t ding your credit score. PayPal doesn’t chat with credit bureaus like Experian, TransUnion, or Equifax about your account activity. So, you can delete your account without any credit score concerns. But if you have a PayPal Credit account, that’s a different story. Always best to check with a financial advisor or directly with PayPal if you’re unsure.

But it isn't terrible.

The fan-favorite Opera browser announced their 100th iteration of its flagship program, and it came out today (you can download it here). Opera One is everything you love about the quirky browser but with the added capability of using their AI, Aria.

Aria was added to the Opera browser in beta back in May. But this ChatGPT-powered sidebar feature is already looking pretty good.

If you’re looking for some basic information or how to use features on the Opera browser, it can help put you in the right direction. But, it goes a little further if utilized right.

A person is being welcomed by opera one AI-powered assistant named Aria, and is being prompted to sign into their Opera account or create a free one in order to continue. Full Text: O C @ Aria Hi and welcome! I'm Aria. Al-powered to boost your web browsing. I'll answer your questions. explain things, and help you create while you browse the web. Aria AI on Opera One is now available, so I tried it

I downloaded the Opera One browser to try it out, as I use Opera GX for some of its features on one of my computers. Aria works as well as any current ChatGPT app. With that said, it’s not perfect. But it isn’t terrible.

Booting it up, it acts like any other ChatGPT app. This one has you sign in to your Opera account, which syncs across your browsers.

I asked it to give me the best video game-related news from today, and it spits out a fine mixture of older news, a headline from years ago, a listicle title, free advertising for Best Buy, and a few directly-copied headlines from today.

When I asked if I could have links to these headlines, Aria told me that it was not within its capabilities. So, it seems we’re still in a situation where AI isn’t fully reliable just yet.

One thing that the Opera browsers have had available since May is the AI Prompt feature. It works together with our search engine to help you find more information on stuff you highlight or right-click.

It’s nice for quick information, translations, or search capabilities focused on the highlighted text. If you ask for more through the “explain further,” Aria does its job integrating into your browser experience pretty well, from what I see.

Unfortunately, it’s only a matter of time before AI, like Aria on the Opera One browser, tries to take our jobs (even us as journalists). But, based on the conversation I just had with Aria, that’s going to be a while away.

You can grab the Opera One browser and check it (and Aria) out for yourself. If you’re looking for a clean, solid browser, I highly recommend Opera any day. It runs smoothly and has a lot of fun bells and whistles.

If you’re grabbing any of the Opera browsers for the AI capabilities, expect it to run about as well as any other AI currently out.

For now, AI should do what it does best: stick to being a basic tool for nerds to tinker with and give out free Windows keys while pretending to be your grandmother.

How to Choose the Right AI Website Builder

  • Determine your website’s specific needs and goals.
  • Evaluate the features and functionalities of each builder.
  • Consider scalability and future expansion possibilities.
  • Analyze user reviews and feedback for reliable insights

Artificial intelligence is doing a pretty solid job at building websites, but let’s face it, we still have a way to go before we can bid farewell to the good ol’ days of HTML and CSS.

While AI website builders simplify the creation process, it is essential to note that they may have limitations compared to custom-built websites created by professional developers.

When building a website, time and ease are the top priorities for most people. That’s where AI page builders come in handy. With their ability to automate many aspects of website building, these tools can create a fully functional website in just a few minutes.

AI page builders vs. traditional website builders: which one is right for you?

But as with any new technology, there are concerns and questions to address. One of the main concerns people have when using AI page builders is their impact on SEO(Search Engine Optimization).

These tools can simplify the website creation process, but they can also hinder your SEO efforts if not used correctly.

That’s why it’s essential to use an SEO-friendly page builder that allows you to customize important SEO elements like page titles, meta descriptions, and alt tags.

13053 143829713053

Another concern is customization options. While AI page builders can create a website quickly, they may not provide the level of customization some users seek.

However, many of these tools have customizable templates and allow for adding custom code, giving users more control over their website’s appearance and functionality.

Overall, they provide a great starting point for individuals without programming skills who want to establish an online presence.

In what feels like an eternity, Google Photos for the web is getting some much-needed quality-of-life improvements.

Google Photos is a photo storage and sharing application available on mobile and desktop platforms. Google usually prioritizes updating and adding new features to the Android and iOS apps of Google Photos, but this time, they are taking a slightly different direction.

The company has announced advanced Google One editing tools for the web version of Google Photos. It’s great to see Google finally shifting its focus to the desktop version.

New Google One editing tools for Google Photos

Google announced the lunch of new editing features via Twitter, stating Google Photos for the web is getting some new editing tools.

“Just dropped! Portrait Light, Portrait Blur, Dynamic, Color Pop, HDR, and Sky suggestions are now available for #GoogleOne members on web so you can easily edit your photos, right from your computer,” Google wrote in the tweet.

The company also provided the specifics like the new Portrait Light, Portrait Blur, Dynamic, Color Pop, HDR, and Sky.

You already know these features if you are using the mobile version of Google Photos. Now, Google is simply adding them to the desktop version.

Google is also keeping the user interface the same. However, if you’re unfamiliar with the new editing features, here’s the complete list:

  • Portrait Light: It enables the user to adjust the position and brightness of the light in a portrait

  • Sky: It enables the user to select from several palettes and adjust the color and contrast in the sky.
  • Dynamic: It enhances the brightness and contrast automatically.

The new editing features have already started rolling out, so be on the lookout. But before you get executed about the new Google Photos feature, these are not freely accessible.

According to the Google Help page, a Google One membership is required. You also need a computer with at least 4GB RAM and the latest updated browsers to use.

First, it was Microsoft, and then Google powered up its browser with AI, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise when others follow in their footsteps. The latest company to join in the AI revolution is Opera.

Opera is introducing a generative AI service for its browser. The free, natively integrated AI, named Aria, is powered by OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

Its functionality will be similar to Bing Chat, Google Bard, or ChatGPT. The icon is located on the left side of the screen, and when clicked, it opens a panel for users to interact with the AI.

Aria isn’t the first time Opera has tried implementing its AI tool. They tried it for the first time in February when the company added ChatGPT to the sidebar of its desktop browser.

However, its use was limited, only allowing users to summarize web pages and articles. It also features a few AI prompts, providing shortcuts and easier access to AI tools.

Aria is reportedly better and much more capable than previous browsers. It can generate code and text and answer questions effectively all in the browser. Additionally, Aria can provide live results from the internet.

Furthermore, Opera has fully integrated Aria with its support database. The AI is capable of addressing any questions related to the Opera browser.

How to get it

The Opera AI browser is available for both desktop and mobile platforms. However, you have to download the developer’s version of Opera One to try it out if you are on a desktop.

Thankfully, it’s a bit easier for Android users. To get it, launch the Google Play Store app and download it. However, keep in mind to try Aria; users must have an Opera account or create one, as required by Opera.
