Traveling is a tapestry of highs and lows, with plenty to say about both. Take it from someone who clocks in at 6 feet 4 inches – I’m that guy you’re probably reclining your seat into.

On one particular journey, I ended up next to a parent. As someone who’s no stranger to the skies, I totally get the struggle of keeping kids entertained on the long haul. I can barely sit still myself.

This time, though, said parent decided to throw an impromptu “Mr. Wiggles” marathon. Nothing personal against the show, but “Fruit Salad, Yummy Yummy” on a loop in the confines of an aircraft is a special kind of torment.

Armed with the best noise-canceling headphones, I thought I was prepared. But nope, my neighbor’s entertainment source didn’t support them, sending my audio oasis into a tailspin. There I was, six hours of flight time, headphone jack tragically idle.

That’s when the true value of something like the AirFly SE Bluetooth Transmitter by Twelve South hit me.

Had my seatmate had it, I could have easily plugged it into their phone’s headphone jack and paired it with a set of wireless headphones.

That way, his child could have continued watching “Mr. Wiggles,” and the rest of us could have enjoyed our in-flight experience in peace. But hey, it doesn’t always work like that, right?

So, what exactly is the AirFly Bluetooth transmitter?

Imagine this: You’re on a long-haul flight, and the in-flight movie is about to start. You reach for your wireless headphones, but alas, the airplane only has a 3.5mm audio jack.

Well, this is where AirFly makes comes into the picture. This tiny device plugs into any headphone jack and wirelessly transmits audio to your headphones. That’s really it. And sure, it doesn’t sound like much, but when you really need it, it’s an absolute godsend.

Video: AirFly

AirFly really proves its worth when you’re stuck on the tarmac and the person next to you thinks they’re the star of a “Mr. Wiggles” concert. It’s your ticket out of cord-city and away from those pricey, ear-pinching airline headphones.

AirFly is not just for flights, though. You can also use it at the gym on any equipment with an audio jack. Picture yourself running on the treadmill, knee-deep in your favorite show, with your wireless headphones providing the soundtrack. No cords to get in your way or limit your movement.

Give this to anyone you know, and look at a wave of common sense and punch them right in the face.

And if you forget to charge it before your trip, don’t worry. You can use AirFly while it’s charging, thanks to the included cable.

How does it pair?

Pairing your device with AirFly is a breeze. It automatically goes into pairing mode when turned on.

And if you ever need to pair it with a different device, there’s a reset button for that. Just remember to turn off any nearby Bluetooth devices, like your phone, when pairing.

The AirFly SE Bluetooth Transmitter is the perfect addition to your tech toolkit, whether you’re a business or recreational traveler, content creator, or fitness fanatic.

Bonus: It’s also a great gift idea. After all, who wouldn’t love to get a little piece of tech magic?

I don’t know about you, but I’m grabbing a few extra AirFlies to tuck into every bag I own. Because the only thing worse than forgetting your device is being the captive audience to another Mr. Wiggles marathon in the sky.

Sonos is working on new premium headphones, and an Apple TV rival  https://knowtechie.com/sonos-apple-premium-headphones-apple-tv-rival/ https://knowtechie.com/sonos-apple-premium-headphones-apple-tv-rival/#respond Thu, 23 Nov 2023 23:28:58 +0000 https://knowtechie.com/?p=339894 Sonos is coming for Apple's crown.

The post Sonos is working on new premium headphones, and an Apple TV rival  appeared first on KnowTechie.

]]>
The long-time Apple rival in the premium audio segment, Sonos, is ready to bring the fight to the company with two of its new products, a pair of headphones, and an Apple TV-like device.

Sonos is currently one of the leading manufacturers of premium smart speakers and sound bars, including the Sonos Ray, HomePod rival Sonos Era 300, and more.

Now, a new report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman claims the company is gearing up to launch a set of premium headphones and a new TV set-top box as early as next year.

Sonos is ready to get in the ring with Apple

In his report, Gurman states that Sonos will finally push into the headphone market with a model priced upwards of $400, ready to release as early as April.

A pair of premium headphones costing over $400 will certainly turn heads, but more importantly, they could become a potential alternative to Apple’s AirPods Max

While it may be the company’s first pair or headphones, Sonos is still a veteran in the sound industry, and their first headphones will likely match their legacy. At least, we expect them to.

According to Gurman, the audio company aims to introduce a TV set-top box as early as 2024 to compete with products from Apple Inc. and Roku Inc.

The report indicates the TV set-top box will cost between $150 and $200 and run apps from popular streaming services.

It all sounds like the Apple TV 4K, right down to the premium pricing.

The headphones also seem pretty interesting, especially with the $400 price tag. Apple’s premium AirPods Max costs more than $500, and with Black Friday deals, it will still set you back around $450.

So, Sonos’s upcoming headphone could be a viable option, especially if it is cheaper than the AirPods Max, and offers good features like noise canceling.

Edifier QD35 Tabletop Bluetooth Speaker Edifier QD35 Tabletop Bluetooth Speaker
4.0
$199.99
Quick Verdict: Edifier made a few odd choices with the QD35, but this is otherwise a great Bluetooth speaker. As long as you can get past the polarizing design, it has good build quality and sounds fantastic.
Pros:
  • Fantastic sound quality
  • LED lights look great
  • App is easy to use
Cons:
  • Polarizing design
  • On the pricey side
  • Front is a fingerprint magnet
KnowTechie is supported by its audience, so if you buy something through our links, we may get a small share of the sale.

LED lights can routinely be found in mice, accent lighting, and even earbuds. LED lights are sometimes included as an afterthought, rather than a deliberate choice.

The $200 Edifier QD35 is a tabletop Bluetooth speaker that was seemingly built around the deliberate inclusion of an LED lighting system.

The Edifier QD35 looks flashy, and I hope it sounds as impressive.

Design and features

The Edifier QD35 has a unique design when compared to other Edifier products and looks slightly out of place in its lineup.

At 10.94 x 6.49 x 5.58 inches and 5.82 pounds, this tabletop Bluetooth speaker isn’t exactly portable but is easier to place in your home decor than a pair of bookshelf speakers.

Looking directly at the Edifier QD35 reveals an industrial aesthetic that exudes some serious gamer vibes.

You’ll find two exposed speakers, a 3-inch mid-base driver, and a 1-inch treble dome tweeter that protrudes slightly from the clear plastic casing. Looking through the casing you’ll find a metallic insert that continues the industrial feel.

Image: Steve Smith/KnowTechie

Once you plug this speaker in, the front of the device truly shines. There is an LED light strip that runs horizontally under the 3-inch speaker and another LED strip that runs around that same speaker.

The lighting is fully customizable in the Edifier Connect app or can be turned off. There’s also a knob on the right side of the device that lets you quickly cycle through preset lighting modes.

The bottom left has a digital clock, which was an awesome touch.

The right edge has one button and two knobs that are stacked vertically. There is a power button that also lets you select from its various inputs, a mode selector knob, and the bottom knob lets you adjust the lighting effects.

The left side of the Edifier QD35 on a wooden table.
Image: Steve Smith/KnowTechie

The left edge of the device reveals a 35W GaN charger that can charge devices via USB-A and USB-C. The USB-A port can charge at a max of 18W, and the USB-C port charges at 35W, or 18W if you use both ports at the same time.

The left side has a somewhat peculiar design. There is a giant 35W text and an odd “Born For Speed, Born For Safety” tagline.

The huge text feels like Edifier was just trying to fill in the white space, and the tagline feels out of place on the speaker. I’m sure it’s referring to the GaN charger, but doesn’t belong on this speaker.

Image: Steve Smith/KnowTechie

Speaking of odd design decisions, you can find another one at the top of the device. The top of the speaker features an oversized Edifier logo.

You can also find Edifier on the front of the device, opposite the clock. Clearly, they didn’t want you to forget who makes this speaker and detracts from what is otherwise a great design.

This image shows the back of a white Edifier speaker on a wooden table, featuring power and audio input ports, with plants and piano in background.
Image: Steve Smith/KnowTechie

Around the back, you will find a power switch, the plug outlet, an AUX port, and a USB-A port. You can also connect your device to this speaker via Bluetooth 5.3, which is by far the most convenient method.

The design is polarizing for sure, but I absolutely love it. The LED lighting is well done and adds to a great overall look. I especially love how the lights reflect off the metallic plate directly behind it.

It’s not at all perfect though. The front can be a fingerprint magnet and the oversized text detracts from it a little bit. The Edifier QD35 can be found in either black or white.

Sound Quality

An Edifier transparent speaker with illuminated purple and blue internals is displayed on a wooden surface, with books and decor in the background.
Image: Steve Smith/KnowTechie

The Edifier QD35 has a 25W 3-inch bass speaker and a 15W 1-inch treble speaker. It outputs mono sound and supports 96kHz sampling when using LDAC via a Bluetooth connection or high-resolution audio when using the AUX or USB-A ports.

As a quick note, LDAC is not supported on iPhones.

With 40W RMS, Edifier claims this speaker can cover a little over 500 square feet of space. This claim seems accurate as the Edifier QD35 had no trouble filling my apartment with sound.

The sound quality is quite good through most of the volume range, with it losing a bit of clarity at high volumes. That wasn’t an issue for me because this speaker was plenty loud once you get the volume to about ten.

At anything less than the upper volume range, the entire sound range sounded quite good. Edifier uses digital signal processing (DSP)  which results in music that is crisp and clear over Bluetooth.

The clarity improves a bit when connected directly through the AUX port. Thanks to the two passive ports on the back, this speaker puts out plenty of bass. Way more than I was expecting from its 3-inch speaker.

Edifier Connect app

The image displays four smartphone screens showcasing a music app's interface with features like soothing sounds, light effects, and audio settings including LDAC technology.
Image: Steve Smith/KnowTechie

The Edifier Connect app is needed to connect to the Edifier QD35. Without the app, my phone couldn’t detect the speaker. Depending on your preference, this can be a positive or a negative.

On one hand, it’s another app on your device. On the other hand, this can be a huge positive for those living near other people.

I live in an apartment, and I have had the unfortunate experience of people around me connecting to my Bluetooth speakers. To say this is frustrating would be an understatement, but hasn’t been an issue thanks to the app requirement.

Luckily, you don’t have to create an account to use the app and the app itself is pretty basic. Just pick your speaker, hit connect, and you are all set.

From there you can adjust the volume, change your input, play white noise in the soothing sounds section, and change the settings. Swiping right shows the light effects menu and lets you change the lighting effect, colors, and modulation rate.

Alternatives to the Edifier QD35

The Tribit XSound Mega Bluetooth speaker is great for anyone who likes the idea of LED lights but needs something more portable. This speaker gets plenty loud, has built-in LED lights, and solid bass. It’s a bit heavy and lacks 360-degree sound.

The Monoprice Harmony Capsule 200 is another portable Bluetooth speaker, loud enough for outdoor use and gives you full 360-degree sound. Like the Edifier QD35, the sound quality diminishes at higher volumes and is a tad heavy.

The Edifier MS50A is a larger and more portable speaker. The sleek wooden design has wireless connectivity and can even connect with Alexa, Spotify, and Apple AirPlay. It is a mono speaker and has no waterproofing, which limits its ability to be used outdoors.

Final verdict

The LED light strips of the Edifier QD35.
Image: Steve Smith/KnowTechie

Should you go out and spend $200 on the Edifier QD35? That largely depends on a couple of important factors.

With its polarizing design, this speaker isn’t for everyone. The LED lights were integral to its design and I happen to love it. So does the rest of my family, but not everyone will appreciate it.

Then there’s the borderline obnoxious placement of the Edifier logo on the top and the tagline on the left.

If you can look past those shortcomings, the Edifier QD35 is a fantastic speaker.  It’s compact enough to fit just about anywhere in your home.

The sound quality is quite good, as long as you aren’t pushing it to its maximum volume. The app is easy to use, and this speaker offers plenty of input options.

At $200, the Edifier QD35 is a bit pricey but well worth the price for its blend of fantastic sound quality and its unique design. It can be found directly through Edifier or from retailers such as Amazon and Best Buy.

Winamp, the iconic music player that ruled the roost in the 2000s, is making a triumphant return to both Android and iPhone platforms.

This news comes straight from the horse’s mouth, the Llama Group, which recently announced its plans during its semi-annual presentation.

In March 2023, Winamp launched its beta version of the “Winamp For Creators” platform, aiming to become a one-stop shop for artists to manage their music monetization.

This includes distribution, licensing, NFT creation, copyright management, and access to a Fanzone for exclusive content creation and direct subscription with fans.

As of now, distribution and Fanzone functionalities are available in “Winamp for Creators.” The NFT functionality is expected to be introduced by the end of 2023.

At the same time, the platform will also be available in French and Spanish, enabling a broader range of artists to use it.

The first half of 2023 also saw the launch of Winamp’s Web Player. This audio player allows users to listen to artists from the Fanzone, personal audio libraries, and numerous radio stations and podcasts.

Furthermore, Winamp’s iOS and Android beta versions were launched during the first half of 2023. The final versions of the Winamp Player for mobile devices are expected to be released by the end of 2023.

All in all, it seems like Winamp is making a comeback, ready to do whatever it did the last time it was around.

Sony has been working on new PlayStation-branded headphones and earbuds under the Pulse monicker. While the company had given a sneak peek into its upcoming gaming-oriented audio products before, we finally have a release date for them.

Sony has now officially announced a release date for the Pulse Elite headset and Pulse Explore earbuds. While the wireless earbuds are coming in a month on December 6th, 2023, the wireless headset is coming a bit later on February 21st, 2024.

Sony is offering lossless low-latency audio using a dongle

We already have multiple headsets from Sony’s gaming gear brand, INZONE, and the company even launched new INZONE earbuds just a month ago priced at $200

With this new gaming audio gear, it offers lossless and low-latency audio with the help of the PlayStation Link USB adapter that plugs into your PS5, PC, or Mac.

However, we don’t know for sure if you will need the dongle with the slimmer disc-less PlayStation 5 Slim coming this fall or if it will come with built-in technology like the PlayStation Portal

Although, Sony plans to sell the PlayStation Link USB adapter as a standalone device, priced at $24.99.

According to Sony, in addition to the 3D audio, the Pulse Explore earbuds and Pulse Elite headset will enable “seamless switching” between compatible devices, enabling users to take calls and enjoy music while gaming.

Overall, it looks like the Japanese company is ready to enhance its already excellent gaming audio portfolio with the new Pulse Explore and Pulse Elite.

And in addition to the new PlayStation 5 Slim launch, the company will be pretty busy for the next couple of months.

Pulse Explore and Pulse Elite pricing and availability

In terms of pricing and availability, both Pulse Explore and Pulse Elite will be available for pre-orders starting November 9 in the United States, UK, France, Germany, and other European countries.

Sony just announced its very first gaming-focused pair of wireless earbuds, INZONE Buds. The new gaming earbuds are priced at $199.99.

Pre-orders have started with the promise of shipping them by the end of this month. The company also announced a slimmer version of its current-gen console, PlayStation 5, if you are keeping track.

Sony is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of audio peripherals, and its INZONE line is catered to gamers. Sony introduced its gaming gear brand INZONE a little over a year ago.

After launching several gaming monitors and some of the best gaming headsets, the company now has a new pair of gaming earbuds, promising a battery life of up to 12 hours and some of the lowest latency in the industry.

INZONE Buds with Active noise cancellation and ambient sound modes

Sony’s new INZONE Buds are not only designed to support the PS5 but also PCs and mobile devices.

The buds also come with a USB-C dongle, which you can use to connect with other devices, reducing the latency figure to fewer than 30 milliseconds.

The INZONE Buds also support Bluetooth LE Audio, but it is only usable if you use a high-end Android smartphone.

However, with this new INZONE Buds, Sony is advertising its 360-degree spatial audio capabilities. But a few steps and software (INZONE Hub PC Software) are required to get the most out of them.

Like any other earbuds, the INZONE Buds are designed to stay comfortable even during prolonged gaming sessions.

According to the company, the earbuds are shaped to produce minimal pressure on your ears, and they sport the same “Dynamic Driver X” as Sony’s flagship WF-1000X earbuds – four silicone ear tips are also included in the box.

While the new INZONE Buds are specially launched for gaming, you still get ANC and ambient sound mode if needed. So, you can also use them for non-gaming audio entertainment, but fair warning, they are not tuned for it.

Lastly, please do not confuse them with Sony’s Pulse Explore earbuds, which Sony has also officially announced about a month ago, and are due to launch soon, also priced at $199.99.

Now, we won’t blame you if you are confused. The company’s audio lineup is a mess, and we can only hope Sony makes it less confusing, which will probably not happen.

Samsung has launched new entry-level earbuds for $99.99, the Galaxy Buds FE, which will be available to purchase on October 10.

They were announced during the FE event, alongside the Galaxy S23 FE and Galaxy Tab S9 FE, all designed to give you the best of Samsung at a lower price.

That gives Samsung a proper competitor for the Pixel Buds-A, OnePlus Buds Z2, or other low-cost, high-feature earbuds.

Here’s what’s good.

Samsung Galaxy Buds FE comes with fan-favorite features

$99.99

The Galaxy Buds FE are the first affordable true wireless headphones from Samsung, designed to work seamlessly with other Galaxy devices. They can also auto-sync with your Samsung TV, if you have one, for late-night viewing without waking up the house.

What We Like:
  • Active Noise Cancellation with Ambient mode
  • New wingtip design to stay in your ears better
  • Deep, powerful sound
  • Pair fast with Galaxy devices and use Auto Switch to the device you're using
KnowTechie is supported by its audience, so if you buy something through our links, we may get a small share of the sale.

The Galaxy Buds FE are the first Galaxy Buds to use a different design. The existing models all have a similar jelly-bean shape that is fairly large, often too large for comfort.

But the new Fan Edition earbuds use a flatter design that sits more securely in your ears. To help this, you also get swappable fins to create a secure, comfortable fit.

The biggest plus point of the new Galaxy Buds FE is Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) to reduce external noise and the Transparency Mode for Ambient Sound.

The image shows a diagram of the Galaxy Buds FE headphones, which feature a new 1-way speaker and two outer and one inner microphone for a deep, powerful bass sound.

The Buds FE also has Bluetooth 5.2 BLE and three mics for clearer voice calls.

According to Samsung, the Buds FE also have the longest battery life in the current Galaxy Buds series.

The company promises up to eight and a half hours of playback time on the earbuds and up to 30 hours of total playback with the case with ANC disabled.

Meanwhile, with ANC enabled, the numbers go down to six and 21 hours, respectively.

While these will work with any phone with Bluetooth, owners of Galaxy devices will get quick pairing and auto-switching between devices, like how AirPods work with the Apple ecosystem.

In addition, you will also get a notification after leaving your Galaxy Buds FE behind through SmartThingsFind if the Lost Mode is activated.

The Galaxy Buds FE has an IPX2 water resistance rating. So, the builds can only take light sweat, nothing more. It’s the cost of keeping the price low, and the company has also left out wireless charging.

The new Galaxy Buds FE will cost you $99.99 and is available in two colorways: Graphite and White.

In terms of the prices, the standard Google Pixel 8 is expected to cost the same as Pixel 7, while the Pro version is expected to come with a $100 higher price tag. We can’t confirm or deny the rumors, but everything will be revealed at the event.

Google Pixel Watch 2

Google has already released an official teaser revealing the Pixel Watch 2 design, which showcases a similar design, except for the back of the smartwatch.

Google has reportedly added new sensors, the reason the back looks different. Otherwise, it’s the same design. Additionally, Google is bringing a number of new Fitbit features and UI redesign to the Watch 2.

According to the leaks, Google has also upgraded the Pixel Watch 2 with the Snapdragon W5 Gen 1 processor and a UWB chip.

Besides that, the Pixel Watch 2 is rumored to feature the same up to 24 hours of battery life as its predecessor but is rumored to swap the original chassis with an all-aluminum one.

In terms of the price, we don’t have the price for the Pixel Watch 2 just yet, but it could be slightly more expensive than its predecessor. The Watch 2 is expected to come in three color options: gold, black, or silver.

Google Pixel Buds Pro in new colors

In addition to the new Google Pixel 8 series smartphone and the Pixel Watch 2, Google is rumored to breathe new life into the Pixel Buds Pro with two new colors.

During the initial announcement teaser, the company briefly showcased one of the new colors, Porcelain, to match the new Pixel Watch 2 and Pixel 8 Pro.

Another new color is Sky Blue. However, it’s not clear if Google will make any hardware improvements to the original Pixel Buds or increase its price.

What Else?

While we don’t have any concrete information, we expect Google to drop the Android 14 on October 4, too. The next version of Android is expected to feature tons of new features.

These features include passkey, larger text options, AI-generated wallpapers, stylus enhancements, and probably, the ability to make your Pixel into a webcam.

That’s not all. It has been three months since the last Pixel Feature drop. So, we are due for an update. Initially, the company was expected to drop new rounds of updates in September, which didn’t happen.

We are assuming Google has something up its sleeve and is saving it up for the Made by Google event.
