Spoiler: it probably has yours.

The post New password leak has 71 million emails in it appeared first on KnowTechie.

Are you still reusing passwords between your different accounts in 2024? You should rethink that, because this giant password leak could well include your details.

Troy Hunt, creator of the helpful Have I Been Pwned website for finding out if your details are in password leaks, says this new leak is one of the largest he’s ever seen.

Dubbed “Naz.API,” this credential stuffing list (used by hackers to try email and password combinations rapidly on their target) has a staggering 70 million email addresses and over 100 million passwords inside.

And unlike many lists on Have I Been Pwned, “a third of the email address have never been seen before.”

If you haven’t already, it’s time to start using a password manager. Preferably one that supports two-factor authentication, and enable that on services that support it while you’re changing passwords.

Then read on for the rest.

New password leak probably has your details inside

If you’re wondering where the data inside this password leak came from, Hunt says it was from “stealer logs” which are malware on infected computers that capture login details then send it out to the hackers.

In a year of high-profile password and data leaks from companies such as LastPass and 23andme, the Naz.API dump is huge. Hunt tested enough of the service+email combinations to be satisfied that the data was legit.

He even found his own data in there, with a password he hadn’t used since before 2011. That’s joined by over 100 million unique passwords, which are repeated enough times that the full password leak contains 1.3 billion entries.

As Hunt notes, the number of recurring passwords means that the general public likely isn’t using a password manager with unique passwords for every service. Maybe it’s time to start.

Best home security cameras (2024) https://knowtechie.com/best-home-security-cameras/ https://knowtechie.com/best-home-security-cameras/#respond Thu, 18 Jan 2024 21:00:38 +0000 https://knowtechie.com/?p=351811 Want to build your own home security system? Here's our favorite security cameras to do just that.

The post Best home security cameras (2024) appeared first on KnowTechie.

]]>
Home security cameras don’t just deter criminals anymore. They can keep an eye out for packages, trigger your security system, or tie into your smart home appliances to save you money on energy costs.

With how many cameras are on the market now, it can be challenging to research which are best. Add to that decision that there isn’t a one-camera-fits-all option, and it gets even more complex.

You don’t have to do any of that, though, as we’ve spent countless hours researching the market while doing hands-on testing on many of the brands on the market.

If you already have smart home devices, you’ll want security cameras that work with your voice assistant, whether Amazon’s Alexa, Google Assistant, or HomeKit for Apple users.

And some security cameras can control your other smart devices, like your smart thermostat, so you don’t waste money running the air conditioning while a door or window is open.

Any of our camera recommendations will do the job, so finding the right fit for your home comes down to the additional features you need.

The best security cameras to roll your own security

TP-Link has been building a name for itself in the home security market, and this Tapo security camera system is an affordable way to cover multiple angles of your home.

This kit gets you two 2K wireless video cameras with color night vision and a 180-day battery life, and the hub to connect them to your network.

The cameras are IP65 weatherproof rated, which means they’ll survive in the rain, and they have two embedded spotlights so they can light up your yard if they sense motion.

You can record video locally by popping a microSD card into the hub or subscribing to the Tapo Care cloud subscription for 30 days of unlimited recording history ($3.49 per month per camera or $11.99 per month for up to ten cameras).

Best with sensors
ecobee SmartCamera Smart Security Bundle ecobee SmartCamera Smart Security Bundle
$179.98

Ecobee makes super stylish smart home devices, and this SmartCamera kit with SmartSensors for doors and windows is no exception. It works with HomeKit and connects to Ecobee's thermostats to control your A/C if a door or window is left open.

What We Like:
  • Stylish camera and small, unobtrusive sensors for door and window monitoring
  • Can sense movement, when doors or windows are open, or smoke alarm sounds and alert you or trigger responses like pausing your A/C
  • Quick setup process
  • Automatic pan and tilt, plus doubles as base unit for your home security system
01/23/2024 07:15 pm GMT

The Ecobee SmartCamera is a great way to add interior monitoring to your home, and it also doubles as a hub to pull in notifications from the SmartSensors included in this kit that monitor the doors or windows they are installed on.

It features a 1080p video feed, looks stylish, and is pretty small and unobtrusive. What it also can do is act as an Alexa device, including responding to voice commands, playing music, giving you the news, or running Alexa Routines.

While the camera is capable of motion sensing, you won’t get alerts unless you subscribe to Ecobee Smart Security, which is $5 per month for one camera or $10 per month for an unlimited number of cameras.

The plan also enables video clip recording, as you only get a snapshot image without it.

The window and door sensors also need the subscription for advanced features like being able to pause your A/C when they’re open (this also requires an Ecobee thermostat).

Best without subscriptions
Eufy Security eufyCam S330 2-Cam Kit Eufy Security eufyCam S330 2-Cam Kit
$549.99

Eufy's new S330 cameras are battery-powered and record 4K footage, but what makes them stand out is including solar charging, which only needs a couple of hours of sun per day to supply all of its power needs. The system needs a hub (included) but that enables local recordings without needing a subscription.

What We Like:
  • 4K resolution for crystal clear video footage
  • Local expandable storage in the HomeBase 3 hub (included)
  • Solar panels on the cameras only need two hours of sunlight a day to charge the batteries enough for 24hrs of use
  • Completely wire-free install
KnowTechie is supported by its audience, so if you buy something through our links, we may get a small share of the sale.
01/23/2024 06:49 pm GMT

Eufy’s EufyCam 3 S330 kit isn’t just a great pair of 4K resolution wireless battery-powered security cameras that are IP67-rated and weatherproof. It is, but that’s not what’s so great about them.

The killer feature is the solar panels on top of each camera, which continuously recharge the internal battery. It only needs two hours of sunlight to get enough power for the other 22 in a day, which is incredible.

That means no more having to go up a ladder to recharge batteries every six months, like on competitor’s units, or even yearly based on Eufy’s estimates for this camera.

The cameras do need a hub to connect to the app and your network, but that’s included in this bundle and it also enables local recordings with the ability to expand storage up to 16TB with a 2.5-inch hard drive.

Best for advanced setups
Ubiquiti Networks UVC G5 Bullet Camera Ubiquiti Networks UVC G5 Bullet Camera
$162.95

These G5 Bullet cameras from Ubiquiti are perfect for making your own self-hosted security camera system, with 1440p resolution streaming, PoE installation, IR night vision and weatherproof construction. They do need a more involved installation though, with Ethernet cables and your own on-premises server to store video footage.

What We Like:
  • Professional quality for making your own self-hosted security camera system
  • 4MP (1440p) resolution with 24 FPS video streaming
  • Powered by Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) so only one cable is needed for installation
  • Weatherproof so can be used indoors and outdoors
01/25/2024 11:11 am GMT

To unburden yourself from subscription fees and to get the best image available, you’ll have to hardwire cameras into a video storage solution in your home.

Ubiquiti makes this process easier, with PoE (Power-over-Ethernet) cameras like the G5 Bullet, which give you a 2K resolution feed and only need an Ethernet cable run to them, and a switch that supports PoE.

They’re IPX4 weatherproof, can record sound and have 30ft of IR night vision, and are pretty easy to mount once you’ve run the cable.

This is a more expensive system overall than most of this list and might need a professional to install. Still, then you’ll have a more robust security system with local storage and the ability to monitor remotely through an app.

Surprisingly affordable
Zmodo Security Outdoor 1080p Wi-Fi IP Camera Zmodo Security Outdoor 1080p Wi-Fi IP Camera
$34.99 $31.99

For a more traditional look, this Wi-Fi IP camera from Zmodo is an affordable way to add a visual deterrent to outside of your property, while gaining 1080p streamed video, motion alerts, and the ability to link to Alexa and compatible smart displays.

What We Like:
  • Traditional design is a visual crime deterrent
  • 1080p video streaming and night vision with adjustable sensitivity
  • Motion alerts
  • IP65 weather resistance and metal case
01/25/2024 11:01 am GMT

There’s no rule about good security cameras needing to be expensive, as evidenced by this Zmodo model. The only real tradeoff is that it needs wiring to power, but that can also be supplied by a USB power bank if you get creative.

It’s got Wi-Fi for its video feed, although only on the 2.4GHz band, and the Zmodo app can monitor up to four cameras at one time which is handy.

Adding a monthly Zmodo cloud subscription of $9.99 adds long-term cloud storage, up from 36 hours without paying. And you also get AI-powered motion notifications from the subscription.

They also have adjustable night vision so you can tweak things to get color images at night, or find the level of night vision that your environment needs.

Best with pan and tilt
Wyze Cam Pan v3 Indoor/Outdoor Wyze Cam Pan v3 Indoor/Outdoor
$39.98 $33.99

Wyze makes some of the best affordable security cameras, and the Pan v3 adds remote controlled pan and tilt motors so you can get the view you want without a complicated setup process. It's also weatherproof, so it can be used outdoors and gives a sharp video feed that can be stored locally or in the cloud.

What We Like:
  • Mechanical pan and tilt controls for getting the perfect field of view
  • Local and cloud storage options
  • Weatherproof design so can be used indoors or outdoors
  • Affordable price for the number of features it has
KnowTechie is supported by its audience, so if you buy something through our links, we may get a small share of the sale.
01/25/2024 10:56 am GMT

Wyze makes impressively affordable security cameras that can be used all over your home. This model is IP65 weatherproof rated, so it can be used outside, and it has mechanical pan and tilt functionality.

That’s a rarity even among more expensive cameras, so to see it on one that costs less than $40 is astonishing.

You also get a 1080p video feed and automatic motion tracking to keep a subject in frame for longer. Or set up to four predefined waypoints, and the camera automatically scans between them to cover a larger area.

You can record continuously to a local microSD card, or the three subscription options enable 14-day cloud storage and smart alerts, or facial recognition and agent-based monitoring on the higher tiers to create a full security system.

Best for cellular connectivity
Arlo Go 2 LTE/Wi-Fi Spotlight Camera Arlo Go 2 LTE/Wi-Fi Spotlight Camera
$251.22

The Arlo Go 2 is a perfect choice for those wanting to cover a larger property with recorded video. That's because it's battery-powered and has optional cellular connectivity so you can install it out of range of your home's Wi-Fi (but you can use Wi-Fi too if you wanted).

What We Like:
  • Completely wire-free installation and operation
  • Color night vision and 1080p video feed
  • Works with Alexa, Google Assistant, and IFTTT
  • Wi-Fi and cellular connectivity options so it can be placed further away from your home
01/25/2024 10:50 am GMT

Sometimes you want to monitor part of your property that isn’t close enough for Wi-Fi signal to reach reliably. The Arlo Go 2 fixes this by also offering 4G LTE cellular connectivity, and local microSD card recording.

That means it requires a data plan from either T-Mobile, US Cellular, or Verizon, and you’ll use anywhere up to 2GB of data a month depending on settings and how often it’s recording.

But that might be the best option for monitoring a remote garage, trail, or anywhere else on your property, like an access gate at the end of a long driveway.

You get 1080p video and night vision, Alexa and Google Home integrations, and a spotlight in case you want color video at night.

Just to let you know, some other features need a subscription, which starts from $4.99 a month per camera or $12.99 per month for an unlimited number. That gets you a 30-day cloud-based video history, various AI detection features, and better notifications.

You can also pay for Secure Plus at $17.99 monthly, which adds 24/7 emergency response, or for Safe & Secure Pro at $24.99 monthly, which adds 24/7 professional monitoring and more.

Blink is owned by Amazon, so you get deep Alexa integration from all of its affordable security cameras. The video doorbell and Outdoor 4 cameras in this bundle are battery-powered, with up to two years of battery life.

All three cameras offer 1080p video through the Blink app, infrared night vision and two-way audio. You can set up local recording by plugging a USB drive into the Blink Sync Module (included in the kit).

A Blink subscription plan ($30 per year for one camera, $100 per year for unlimited cameras) is needed for several functions.

That includes live view watching over five minutes, where you get 90 minutes with a subscription, recordings triggered by motion detection, a 60-day recording history, and easy sharing of clips.

You also get a few more notification options and an extended warranty.

Best for easy install
Ring Stick Up Cam Pro Battery Ring Stick Up Cam Pro Battery
$179.99

The Ring Stick Up Cam Pro with battery is a completely wire-free security camera that can be used indoors or outdoors and installed in minutes. It can record motion-activated video and stores it in the cloud, but you'll need a subscription to access more than the last few days of recordings.

What We Like:
  • Easy installation with no wiring necessary
  • Integrates with Alexa and IFTTT
  • No hub needed
  • Inbuilt siren and 1080p video feed
01/24/2024 09:06 pm GMT

Ring’s Stick Up Cam Pro Battery is its most advanced security camera, able to be placed anywhere as it’s completely wireless. You can expect at least six months of use between charges, depending on how often it records.

You get crisp HDR-enhanced 1080p video footage, advanced motion detection, color night vision and dual-band Wi-Fi so you have a better chance of solid connectivity.

The motion detection is helped by radar, so it pulls fewer false alarms than camera-only detection systems.

It does have one main drawback though, in that you need a Ring Protect subscription to access recorded events. That’s $3.99 per month or $39.99 per year for one camera, or $10.99 per month, $100 per year for unlimited cameras and a longer warranty.

And for $20 per month or $200 per year, you also get 24/7 professional monitoring, cellular backup, and a few Ring Alarm Pro services. That’s still highly competitive when you look at other professional monitoring options from the big brands.

Best for Google Home users
Google Nest Cam Outdoor or Indoor Battery Google Nest Cam Outdoor or Indoor Battery
$179.99 $163.96

The Google Nest Cam uses a rechargeable battery for power, so it can be installed in minutes at any location, providing excellent video streaming from the dual-band Wi-Fi. It's also usable indoors or outdoors, thanks to a weatherproof exterior.

What We Like:
  • Weatherproof housing so can be used anywhere
  • Dual-band Wi-Fi for better connectivity
  • Installs quickly with no need to run wires
01/24/2024 08:42 pm GMT

For those heavily in the Google Home ecosystem, only one name will do for a security camera. That’s the Google Nest Cam, which runs on a rechargeable battery and can be used indoors or outdoors.

That means no wires to install, and as it has dual-band Wi-Fi, you can often get a stronger video stream than cameras with 2.4GHz Wi-Fi only.

You get 1080p video and great motion detection, but you’ll need a Nest Aware subscription to view any recorded events older than three hours ago, limiting its utility until you pony up $6 per month for 30-day history or $12 per month for 60 days.

Everything is handled in the Google Home app, whether that’s live viewing the feed or checking notifications or watching recorded clips.

The best security camera is the one you’ll use

With smaller camera sensors getting ever cheaper, even the most affordable security cameras can give you 1080p video recording and live feeds.

The question is which other added extra features you want, and if you are okay paying for a subscription to cloud recording (handy if the power goes out) or if you prefer local recording options.

Whatever your needs, you’ll find something on this list that will fit the bill.

Can you use AirPods on a plane? https://knowtechie.com/will-apple-airpods-work-on-a-plane/ https://knowtechie.com/will-apple-airpods-work-on-a-plane/#respond Wed, 17 Jan 2024 22:38:32 +0000 https://knowtechie.com/?p=96127 And more importantly, will airlines let you use AirPods on the plane.

The post Can you use AirPods on a plane? appeared first on KnowTechie.

]]>

Quick Answer: Yes, AirPods work on planes and you can even use them during your flight. Airlines treat them no differently than wireless headphones. However, you should be aware of a few limitations.

True wireless earbuds like Apple AirPods are great for work, home, and working out. But what about travel? More specifically, do they work on a plane?

At first thought, it seems obvious. But sometimes, things aren’t as simple as ‘yes’ or ‘no.’ While AirPods might technically work on an airplane, rules can change.

For example, the Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) rules over device use on aircraft. So what’s the deal with using your AirPods and AirPods Pro on a plane?

So, will AirPods work on a plane?

Short answer: Yes

Yes, your AirPods will work on a plane, and yes, you can use them in the air. And, of course, you can use AirPods on in-flight TVs. Airlines treat them no differently than wireless headphones.

This functionality comes right out of the box available across all models includeing the second generation airpods, all the way to Apple AirPods Max.

However, you’ll have to enable your phone’s Airplane Mode to disable cellular radio. Then, turn Bluetooth back on. Thankfully, that’ll keep you inside the FAA’s rules.

READ MORE: AirFly connects your wireless headphones to in-flight entertainment systems

If your flight has onboard WiFi, you can connect that too. That’s all because, in 2013, the FAA relaxed its regulations on in-flight device use:

If your air carrier provides WiFi service during flight, you may use those services. You can also continue to use short-range Bluetooth accessories, like wireless keyboards.

Can you use AirPods for phone calls on an airplane?

Sadly, no. The only thing you can’t do is make voice calls, even over WiFi, thanks to FCC regulations prohibiting airborne calls from using cell phones.

Do Apple AirPods 2nd generation work with in-flight entertainment?

Image: Twelve South

Ah, in-flight entertainment. The best way to snooze through red-eye transatlantic flights. But there’s a problem.

Airlines don’t often give out headphones for free anymore. That’s okay; most of us have earbuds in our pockets, but do your AirPods work on a plane to watch movies?

The answer is yes, but you’ll need an adapter to connect things. We like Twelve South’s AirFly range, which works with in-flight entertainment systems or the TVs at your local gym.

If you don’t have a Bluetooth adapter, thankfully you can use AirPods or any other Bluetooth device for more than just watching movies on a plane. For instance, you can listen to music, podcasts, or audiobooks via your laptop or smartphone.

Using AirPods on a plane without Wi-Fi

No worries if you don’t have a Bluetooth adapter! Thankfully, you can still use AirPods or other Bluetooth devices for more than just watching movies on a plane.

For instance, jam out to music, catch up on podcasts, or get lost in audiobooks via your laptop or smartphone, all without Wi-Fi.

AirPods connect to your device using Bluetooth, so you don’t need an internet connection. Just remember to set your device to airplane mode and enable Bluetooth while you’re in the sky.

Can you use AirPods on a plane?

Yup, AirPods work basically anywhere.

So the next time you fly, remember to use your Apple AirPods in the air, at the terminal, or anywhere gate-to-gate as long as your phone is in Airplane Mode.

Key PointDescription
Bluetooth ConnectivityAirPods use Bluetooth technology to connect with devices, which doesn’t require Wi-Fi or data
Airplane Mode CompatibilityEven when a device is in airplane mode, Bluetooth can still be enabled, allowing AirPods to function
In-flight EntertainmentSome airlines, like Delta, are rolling out Bluetooth connectivity for their in-flight entertainment systems, making it possible to use AirPods for this purpose
Airline PoliciesThe use of Bluetooth devices like AirPods is subject to the airline’s regulations. It’s always a good idea to check with the airline before the flight
Battery LifeAirPods have a good battery lifespan, making them suitable for long flights. The charging case provides multiple charges for even longer usage
Noise Cancellation (AirPods Pro)AirPods Pro feature active noise cancellation, which can be useful on noisy flights

And there you have it, folks, your comprehensive guide to using AirPods on a plane, all neatly packed in the table above.

It’s clear that whether you’re cruising at 30,000 feet with no Wi-Fi in sight or just want to tune out the world around you, AirPods have got your ears covered.

FAQs (frequently asked questions)

Can I use AirPods on Delta flights?

Absolutely, you can! Not wanting to be left in the technological dust, Delta Air Lines has hopped on the Bluetooth bandwagon and equipped their inflight entertainment systems with wireless connectivity. So yes, your beloved AirPods can now be your flight companion.

Do AirPods stop your ears from popping on a plane?

Sure, but don’t expect miracles from your AirPods. They’re great for drowning out the drone of the plane engine or that chatty passenger next to you, but they’re not going to stop your ears from popping. That’s because the popping sensation is due to changes in air pressure, not whether or not you’re jamming out to your favorite tunes.

Can you use AirPods on a lane without Wi-Fi?

Your AirPods don’t need Wi-Fi to work. They’re like your loyal Golden Retriever, always ready to play fetch, whether you’re at home, in a park, or 35,000 feet up in the air.

Samsung took the curtains off the Galaxy S24 series today, and the powerful smartphones are heavily leaning into AI features.

From editing tools to easier search and on-device translation, they’re full of handy features that will make life a little easier.

They also come with a new chipset, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy that promises more power while being more efficient so battery life should improve.

Here’s what to know.

The Galaxy S24 series is now official

Samsung S24 playing a video held in a right hand
Image: Samsung

Samsung’s Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S24+ are now official and have minor upgrades on the outside. The real improvements are under the hood, with Galaxy AI features everywhere.

The screens are slightly increased in size by 0.1 inches, so that’s 6.2 inches for the S24 and 6.7 inches for the S24+. They’re also brighter, with 2,600 nits of peak brightness, and the S24+ gets a 1440p resolution (up from 1080p).

You get a 50MP main camera, 12MP ultrawide, and 10MP 3x telephoto. Those are the same cameras from the S23, which were already pretty good.

While the camera hardware is unchanged from last year, both phones get a host of AI-powered editing tricks and better support for HDR photographs.

That includes the Photos app, which analyzes photos as you browse and suggests edits to make them better based on the composition and subject in the frame.

In the US, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy powers both phones, with the Exynos 2400 for Galaxy chip being used elsewhere, paired with 8GB of RAM on the S24 and 12GB on the S24+.

Battery size is also increased slightly over last year’s series, with 4,000mAh for the S24 and 4,900mAh for the S24+.

And all three Galaxy S24 handsets promise seven generations of operating system updates, and seven years of security updates.

Samsung Galaxy S24 & S24+ Samsung Galaxy S24 & S24+

The Samsung Galaxy S24+ is a fusion of sleek aesthetics and strong performance. Its standardized one-mass design and slimmer bezels around a 6.7-inch display contribute to a visually pleasing and immersive viewing experience. Available in a spectrum of colors, with storage options of 256GB and 512GB, starting from $999.99.

What We Like:
  • The S24+'s sleek design and larger screen size significantly enhance the viewing experience.
  • An advanced thermal control system ensures optimal performance without overheating.
  • The S24+ offers a balance between cost and features, starting at $999.99.
  • A variety of color options allow buyers to personalize their device choice.

Galaxy S24 Ultra

The flagship of flagships, the Galaxy S24 Ultra is more phone than most people needs, but that’s kind of the point.

This year, Samsung used titanium for the case for durability reasons and not to save much in weight. You also get Wi-Fi 7, which will give better connectivity when used with compatible networking gear.

The 6.8-inch screen is now flat, finally dropping the curved glass edges that it kept from the Note series. That’s a good thing, making the phone look better and easier to write on with the S Pen.

The other big change? The 10x zoom from the S23 Ultra is gone, replaced with a 50-megapixel 5x zoom that should give you better images.

The other three cameras are unchanged, with a 200MP main, a 10MP 3x telephoto, and a 12MP ultrawide. The selfie camera is still at 12MP.

It’s powered by the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy chipset, which will be the case wherever the S24 Ultra is purchased.

The other two S24 models are using that chipset in the US, and Exynos chips everywhere else.

Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra

The Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra marries form and function with a seamless one-mass design and slimmer bezels. Its 6.7-inch display offers immersive viewing, while the improved thermal control system ensures sustained performance power. Available in a range of colors and storage options, starting at $999.99.

What We Like:
  • The S24 Ultra's larger screen size and slimmer bezels make for an improved, more immersive viewing experience.
  • The device’s enhanced thermal control system ensures optimal performance, even during heavy use.
  • With a starting price of $999.99, the S24 Ultra offers value for money, considering its advanced features and sleek design.
  • Available in a variety of colors, the S24 Ultra gives you the freedom to choose a device that reflects your personal style.

New AI features

Image: KnowTechie

Every model in the Galaxy S24 series is chock-full of AI, for good or for ill. They use a mix of local and cloud-based AI, and Google’s Gemini AI (also found on the Pixel 8 Pro) runs on-device.

These power multiple new tools from image and video editing to real-time translation, either in calls or in messaging apps.

And a new Circle to Search feature makes it easier than ever to find out information about something you just saw or read, without having to figure out keywords for search.

Preorders are live for the Galaxy S24 series

The Galaxy S24 starts from $799.99 for 128GB of storage, with preorders coming with a host of benefits including a free storage upgrade to the next tier and up to $100 of Samsung Credit.

The post How to update your iPhone appeared first on KnowTechie.

Apple releases updates for the iPhone throughout the year, with a major update every fall. The major update is timed with the release of that year’s iPhone range.

This year, iOS 17 is here, with tweaks to autocorrect, and many other requested features.

This begs the question: How do you update your iPhone to iOS 17, and what do those updates do?

The smaller updates bring any feature updates that missed the major update or patch vulnerabilities and other bugs. While major ones can completely change your iOS from an older version to the latest version.

You can manually update iOS on your iPhone or let the iPhone do it automatically. The best way to keep your iPhone secure from attack is to keep it updated, so we’ll show you how.

How to update your iPhone

If you are ready to update your iPhone, follow the steps below. This works for any update, whether it is a minor update or a major one.

Before you start, it’s worth checking if your iPhone is compatible. Every iPhone since the iPhone X is compatible, so think about possibly upgrading if you are on an older model.

  1. Open Settings

iPhone with arrow pointing to settings

    Tap on the Settings app.

  2. Navigate to General

screenshot of ios settings showing the general menu item

    Tap on the General category.

  3. Open Software Update

ios settings software for how to update your iphone

    Tap on Software Update.

  4. Select the update

ios software update page on iphone showing ios 17 update

Apple decoupled major updates from security ones, so tap the Upgrade to iOS 17 banner at the bottom.

  5. Download the update

    ios software update screen

Tap on the Download and Install button.

  6. Confirm the install

Tap on Install, then wait for the iPhone to finish updating and reboot itself.

  7. And you’re done

The graphical user interface interacts with the application.

Once the iPhone reboots, you should be on iOS 17.

Pro Tip

While you’re still on the update menu, tap on Automatic Updates and make sure that both toggles next to Download iOS Updates and Install iOS Updates are green. By doing this, you’ll never have to update your iPhone again manually.

Now you’ve got your iPhone updated to the latest version, iOS 17, patching out those nasty vulnerabilities that could have let attackers get into your device and bringing all the latest features.

Bad weather and power outages are becoming more common. I had several mini outages last night while trying to work, so the idea of a whole house battery system is very appealing.

That’s precisely what EcoFlow just announced at CES 2024 with its new Delta Pro Ultra system. The modular battery backups can be wired into your home and into solar power to recharge while the sun shines.

The company also announced an upgraded Smart Home Panel 2, which wires into your home’s existing wiring so you can unplug and plug more batteries in as needed.

EcoFlow’s Delta Pro Ultra battery system reduces dependence on the grid

This whole system works as a giant UPS for your home, able to switch over in milliseconds if it detects a drop in the supply to your house.

The Smart Home Panel 2 also intelligently recharges the batteries from either solar or the grid, and doles out power to your home if it thinks your appliances need it.

The batteries are a significant investmentand come with a five-year warranty, although they should be good for ten yearsbefore they start to degrade and go under 80% capacity.

Unlike many CES announcements, this one is ready to order from EcoFlow. The EcoFlow Delta Pro Ultra consisting of the inverter and battery costs $5,799, while the Intelligent Kit that adds the Smart Home Panel is $7,199.

Xpeng has a crazy flying car that 9-year-old me needs, like yesterday https://knowtechie.com/xpeng-crazy-flying-car-ces/ https://knowtechie.com/xpeng-crazy-flying-car-ces/#respond Thu, 11 Jan 2024 16:16:36 +0000 https://knowtechie.com/?p=356105 CES 2024 doesn't disappoint with this awesome flying car that's more than a concept car.

The post Xpeng has a crazy flying car that 9-year-old me needs, like yesterday appeared first on KnowTechie.

As a child of the 80s, I grew up wishing that all the flying, transforming cars from shows like M.A.S.K. would fly off the screen and into real life. That never happened, until today.

CES is often the time for crazy tech, with robots of every description and ultra-bright TVs. It’s also the home of concept vehicles, and the wackier the better.

Called the Land Aircraft Carrier, this eSUV packs a small electric quadcopter into the back. I say small, but it’s large enough for passengers.

Finally, those Saturday morning cartoon dreams are a real thing. Even better, it’s no tech demo; the company is turning it into a real product that you can buy.

Chinese EV manufacturer Xpeng’s eVTOL division, AeroHT, is going to start production on the Land Aircraft Carrier early next year.

The Xpeng AeroHT Land Aircraft Carrier is an insanely cool flying car

Just look how cool this thing is in the video above. It’s everything the Cybertruck wishes it was, with sleek futuristic lines and six chunky offroad tires.

And then it parks, and a two-person quadcopter slides out of the back of the eSUV and unfolds, before flying away. I NEED IT, safety considerations be darned.

While this is still in development, some designs or specifications may change, Xpeng says that some specs are set in stone.

That includes four or five passengers in the eSUV, with an extended range electric powertrain that can recharge the eVTOL several times.

The eVTOL quadcopter can carry two people, supports manual and autonomous flight modes, and can handle low-altitude flights. Perfect for seeing the sights once you park, although it will be illegal to use in many areas in the US.

And the price for all of this? Well, XPeng founder He Xiaopeng says it will be around RMB 1 million ($140,500 USD). Seems downright reasonable to me.

CES is in full swing, showing off the best in robotics from vacuums to lawnmowers and everything in between. It’s also when TV manufacturers show off their next range, and it doesn’t disappoint.

We’ve seen some of the largest TVs to launch, with super bright backlights thanks to mini-LED. That tech is also making its way to laptops, and is a nice stopgap while more advanced panel tech is being developed.

We’ve rounded up our favorite QLED TVs from CES 2024, and here’s what you need to know about them.

TCL

tcl 115-inch qled tv in a living room
Image: TCL

TCL makes some of our favorite QLED TVs, and this year’s range turns everything up to 11. The flagship is now a 115-inch monster called the QM891G.

This huge TV has a staggering 5,000 nits of peak brightness, and will have stellar HDR performance due to that and the 20,000 mini-LED dimming zones it comes equipped with.

TCL didn’t just improve the panel for this generation, as it now has a 6.2.2 Dolby Atmos speaker system with two up-firing and two subwoofer channels as well as six normal speakers.

You also get a 144Hz refresh rate, Game Accelerator 240 for 1080p gaming at 240Hz, and HDMI 2.1 ports that support 4K120 variable refresh rate gaming.

This behemoth of home theater will be available this summer, with a “under $20,000” price tag (via FlatPanelsHD).

Hisense

hisense 110-inch qled tv in a living room
Image: Hisense

Hisense is another big name in QLED TVs, and its latest flagship is eye-blindingly bright. The 110UX TV is rated for 10,000 nits of peak brightness.

It can get to this staggering level of brightness thanks to a mini-LED backlight with 40,000 local dimming zones.

That’s double the specifications we’ve seen on any other QLED TV, but we should say that specifications don’t always translate to picture quality.

Hisense also claims a 95% of the BT.2020 gamut, also higher than any other TV we’ve seen so it remains to be seen how that holds up when reviews start rolling in.

Pricing and availability for the 110UX TV have yet to be announced, but expect a five-figure price tag if similarly sized TVs are any indication.

Samsung

https://youtu.be/-itkMa8k9UE

While this isn’t a fully-featured product as yet, Samsung has something special cooking. That’s a transparent micro LED display, so you can look through it while you watch.

Now, we’re not 100% sure this is going to be QLED, but since Samsung is only using OLED or QLED these days, it’s a fair guess.

What it can do is look like normal transparent glass when off, and still display a vibrant picture when on.

That will open the door to a wide range of other applications, apart from making your TV look cooler when off. Seriously, nobody has ever looked at the dark rectangle and thought it looked good.

The screens from Minority Report are almost here. Almost.

Roku Pro Series

Image: Roku

Roku is adding a premium range to its existing smart TVs, the Roku Pro Series. With QLED and mini-LED backlighting, they’ll have a vibrant picture quality.

They also have local dimming from thousands of mini-LEDs, and a brand-new remote with hands-free voice control for quickly finding entertainment to watch.

Roku also says they come with “wide cinematic sound” which might mean the speakers are actually fairly good, although we’d still recommend a soundbar.

The new Roku Pro Series TVs will be available from Roku later this spring. Pricing is yet to be announced, but we estimate it won’t be too much higher than the current Plus Series.

QLED is here to stay

We really like QLED for many home viewing environments, as it can get super bright and handles reflections well. That’s important for bright living rooms, or similar bright locations.

And it looks like per-pixel microLED is still a few years off at scale, so we’re going to enjoy the generational leaps of QLED as they come.

CES is in full swing, with tons of robotic vacuum cleaners to keep the inside of your house tidy. Many of those same companies are also coming for the outside of your home, with robotic lawnmowers.

These new generation robotic lawnmowers don’t need annoying-to-install guide wires around the perimeter of your lawn. Instead, they use computer vision and GPS to keep them inside your boundary lines.

Here’s what you need to know about the new robotic lawnmowers.

Ecovacs Goat GX-600

render of ecovacs goat gx 600 on a purple background
Image: KnowTechie

Ecovacs makes some of our favorite robovacs, and their second robotic lawnmower, the Goat GX-600, looks like it will be a winner.

It doesn’t need physical boundaries setup before it can get to work, shortening the setup time considerably.

Instead, it uses the same impressive AI obstacle avoidance and mapping seen on the Ecovacs Deebot range of robovacs, so it can map your lawn and figure out where to cut.

We’ll hear more about the pricing and how it maps your lawn closer to release in Q2 of this year, when we hope to have some hands-on experience.

Aiper Horizon U1

aiper horizon u1 robotic lawn mower mowing the lawn in front of a modern house
Image: Aiper

Aiper is better known for its pool-cleaning robots, but its first robotic lawnmower looks great. The Horizon U1 uses AI and advanced sensors to avoid needing a physical boundary wire.

It’s designed for smaller yards, with up to 0.7 acres of support from the base unit. It can be extended with a Signal Relay Station for more complicated or more extensive lawns.

Like a robovac, it’ll return to the dock and recharge once it gets close to low charge, so it’ll hopefully not get stranded out on your yard.

The Aiper Horizon U1 will be available closer to the end of 2024. Pricing details have yet to be made public at this time.

Luba 2 AWD Series

luba 2 awd series robotic lawn mower on an inclined lawn
Image: Luba

If you want your robotic lawnmower to look more like a F1 car, you’re going to want to check out the Luba 2 AWD series.

These stylish mowers from Mammotion can tackle tall grass and short, even on steep inclines. That’s pretty impressive, and with multiple versions depending on how large your lawn is, you can pick the right one for you.

They use 3D vision and a base unit so they don’t need a pesky perimeter wire, can print patterns on your lawn, and have adjustable cutting heights.

To set it up, you drive the robomower around your lawn like a remote control car, which sets the boundaries. Once done, it’ll cut inside those every time.

What’s more, they’re available to preorder, starting from $2,099, with an end of February ship estimate.

Segway Navimow i Series

segway navimow i110 mowing a lawn
Image: Segway

Segway is better known for its self-balancing personal mobility scooters, but they also have a growing robotic lawnmower range. The new Navimow i Series brings some impressive upgrades from its existing models.

The biggest is the ability to work without a boundary wire, as it now has an on-device system for tracking its location so it mows your lawn and nothing else.

It also gets a vision system for obstacle avoidance which also helps with the new positioning system, making it more accurate under tree cover.

And it can customize cutting patterns through the smartphone app, so your lawn will look the best on the block.

What we don’t know at this point is a release date or pricing, but we’ll update you as we find out more.

The local teenagers are about to be out of a job

The rise of the electric robotic lawnmower is great news for everyone, except for the local teenagers.

Being able to keep your lawn at a consistent height automatically is a godsend, especially for those who live in HOAs.

The only thing is that they’re all relatively expensive, but how much is your time worth? That adds up quickly, and you could save money if you look at it that way.
